"I was born in Ravia, Oklahoma-- or the Indian Territory-- as it did not become a state until 1907, and was named by my grandmother-- Lucy Pearl; Lucy was my aunts name. Grandmother gave me a pair of red shoes every birthday while we lived in Oklahoma. My dad was in the Post Office- always did office work. We moved to Vallejo, California in 1908 or 1909 where he worked in the Navy Yard office at Mare Island. I broke my arm that year playing hopscotch. Two years later our family moved to Klamath Agency, Indian Reservation, Oregon, 30 miles north of Klamath Falls. Dad was Chief Clerk at the Agency. There were no white schools and my Aunt Dell moved out there from Oklahoma and taught at a Day School off the reservation."

His only son, William Jr. was living in Klamath Falls at that time. He also had four living sisters; Bess Petty, Louise Woods, Pauline Hotchkin, Ruth Masters, Lucy Carson, and Helen Russell. It is likely that he was divorced from his wife Frances at this time as no wife is named on the funeral records and when his son died, his mother is listed as Frances Padgett, so probabily she had remarried. Funeral records show that he was born in Durant, Oklahoma and had been a carpenter for most of his life.6

Hotchkin is his father and guardian and that he was 7 years old on July 29th the year before the document was filed on 22 February 1875. The will of Anna Maria Hotchkin establishes her as mother of Walter J., Vol 64, Pg 155, Letters 24, 106. of Paris, NY. In his grandmothers Will he is mentioned as the son of Charles; and left $200, but a codicil dated 8 July 1891 disowns him and says that he shall receive no part of her estate. The Paris Town Clerk furnished his birth and death dates. It seems somewhat confusing that his mothers and his wife’s names are the reversal of each other.

We know quite a bit about Alexander and his wife Jennie from various available records. At the 1900 Census, they are living in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory; now the Northeast part of Oklahoma. Living nearby were Charles E. Hotchkin and his wife Mary. The History of the State of Oklahoma, published in 1909 says that Alexander was an Indian school teacher for several years and then went to California to work for the US Government at the Mare Island Ship Yards. According to the children’s birth records given in the 1920 Census, their move to California would have been between 1907 and 1910; and their later move to Oregon about 1913. At the 1900 Census he had said that he was an Insurance Agent. The records at O'Hair Funeral Home say that he was an Accountant prior to his death and his daughter Lucy Pearl, in a letter to the Compiler, says that he worked for several Post Offices while in Oklahoma.
At the 1910 Census he is found in two places; he, his wife and children are found at 130 Illinois Street, Valley City, Salano Co., California, which would be the Mare Island area, and he is also listed as a boarder in the home of Silas and Lillian Robinson, Klamath Falls, Oregon. Here, he is described as a clerk at the Indian Agency. At both places he says that he has been married 16 years. At the Valley City location, all his children are listed as living at home and all except Ruth were born in Indian Territory. Ruth was born after arriving in California. Mary Louise and Helen Roberta were born after this date in Klamath. His obituary says that he worked in the Indian Agency from 1910 to 1919 when he retired due to ill health. The Compiler has visited the Klamath Indian Agency; about 30 miles north of Klamath Falls, now empty and fenced to protect the historical buildings. It was here that Mary Louise and Helen Roberta were born. Alexander and his wife Jennie made their home in Shippington, the lakeshore area of Klamath Falls, where they operated the Cook House for the Klamath Lumber and Box Company. The obituary said that his wife, 6 daughters and one son, three sisters, one brother and 11 grandchildren survived him. City Directories are available for Klamath Falls starting in 1936 and these directories give a further insight into the lives of Alexander's family. In 1936 he and Jennie are living at 2810 Front Street. At the next available directory, 1942-43, Jennie is a widow and operating the Shippington Boarding House by herself. At the 1949-50 directories, Jennie is operating the boarding house with the help of her son William R. Sr.
His widow, Jennie F. 9 Jun 1947, filed the Will of Alexander for probate. This Will listed his children as: Pauline D. Hotchkin, age 51, New York City; Lucy Carson, age 47, Redding, CA; Bessie Petty, age 40, Seattle, WA; Ruth Masters, age 38, Holland, OR; Louise Wood, age 35, Portland, OR; Helen Russel, age 32, Shippington, OR; William Hotchkin, age 49, Shippington, OR. According to the Will, he owned two pieces of real estate; his home, which was on lot 7 & 8 of Shippington Addition in Klamath Falls and 37 acres which was Lot 3 of Sec. 7 in Township 41 South, of Range 5, East of the Willamette Meridian, OR.
A Certificate is recorded in the County Recorders Office, Klamath County that show A. S. Hotchkin appointed as a pastor of the Yainax Indian Mission and entitled to perform marriages. The District Superintendent, Klamath District, and Conference of the Methodist Church of Oregon signed this certificate. The compiler has a copy of this document. Ebenezer Hotchkin Jr., in notes found in the Presbyterian Historical Society, refers to Alex as a preacher and teacher.

Alice L. Parshall

F, (1862 - 1936)
Alice L. Parshall was born in 1862 at Concord, Jackson County, MI, USA. She was the daughter of James H. Parshall and Mary Ann Nearpass. Alice L. Parshall married Joseph M. Gary on 27 April 1878 at Marshall, Calhoun County, MI, USA.1 She married Edwin Andy (Edward) Hotchkin at Spring Arbor, Jackson County, MI, USA, on 4 March 1888.2 Alice L. Parshall and Edwin Andy (Edward) Hotchkin were divorced circa 1892 at Jackson County, MI, USA. She married Lewis D. Straw at Concord, Jackson County, MI, on 4 August 1893. Obviously there is a mistake here as The Compiler has a Hotchkin child born after her marriage to Straw..1 Alice L. Parshall married S. T. Tripp on 10 March 1917 at Jackson, Jackson County, MI, USA.1 Alice L. Parshall died in 1936 at Jackson County, MI. She was buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, at Concord, Jackson County, MI, USA.

The marriage of Alice Parshall Gary to Andy Hotchkin is given in Jackson Co. Vital Records, H-11 as 4 March 1888. He gave his parents as Elie Hotchkin and Electa Smith and she as James H. Parshall and Mary Nearpass, both resided in Spring Arbor. Edwin said that he was born in New York and she in Concord, MI. They were married by Seldon Woodworth, JP and witnessed by G. W. and Frankie Harrington in Spring Arbor. He gave his age as 49. She gave her age as 26. They must have divorced because she married Lewis D. Straw on 4 August 1893. Alice had an earlier marriage to Mr. Gary as that name is given on the Marriage License. At that time she gave a middle initial of L.

Earnest Frank Hotchkin

M, (1 June 1859 - 9 November 1936)
Earnest Frank Hotchkin was born on 1 June 1859 at El Paso, Woodford County, IL, USA. This birth date is in his mothers Civil War Pension application.1,2 He was the son of Eber Hall Hotchkin Segt. and Celia Ann Bayne. He married Anna (Annie) Miller Mueller at Peoria County, IL, USA, on 20 July 1880. Marriage date according to 1900 census and IL Marriage Index..3 Earnest Frank Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1900 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, F. E., age 40, b 6-1859 in IL, father born IL, mother OH, switchman for railroad; wife Annie, age 38, b 6-1861, born MO, parents born Germany; daughter Della M., Nov 1881, age 19, born IL, dress trimmer; son John F., age 18, b 3-1882 in SD, single, day labor; son William M., age 16, b 4-1884 in SD, single, apprentice blacksmith; son Hugh J., age 13, b 11-1886 in SD, day labor; dau Frances C., age 8, b 10-1891 in IL, at school; dau Hanna M., age 6, b 10-1893 in IL, at school; son Walter J., age 4, b 10-1895 in IL; dau Myrtle M., age 2, b 11-1897 in IL.. He married Matilda Frichow Firhon at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA, in 1918. Date according to the 1930 census.. Earnest Frank Hotchkin was a Carpenter in 1920. He resided at Chicago, Cook County, IL, in 1928. He died on 9 November 1936 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, at age 77. Listed as Frank E. in Cook County Death records..4,5 He was buried at Mount Glenwood Memory Gardens (West), at Willow Springs, Cook County, IL, USA.

Frank's grandson Hugh Miller Hotchkin reports on this individual, but much of the information was confused with his father, Eber. Hugh says that Frank had brothers who joined the Union army and one died of starvation in a confederate prison camp. This was his father, Eber. According to Hugh, Frank (Eber) moved down the Allegheny River and Ohio River to North Bend, Ohio, and then, across Indiana to El Paso, IL where they lived for a while. Eber did live and was married in El Paso. From there the family moved across Iowa and ended near Mitchell, South Dakota (Hugh is correct that this would be Frank's family). After hardships with cold winters and dry summers Frank decided to move to Chicago. The move to Chicago was in cattle cars and they ended at and lived in an area at the Chicago Stock Yards called "back of the yards."
The 1900 census of Chicago, Cook Co., IL finds him living at 5143 Winchester St with his wife Annie. This census gives his birth as Jun 1859 and the place as IL. The census report says that they had 10 children, 8 still living and they had been married 20 years. The census says, his father was born in NY and mother in Ohio. His occupation was R. R. Switchman and he owned his home with a mortgage.
After the death of his wife Anna, Frank married the house keeper, Mrs Ferguson, who had a son LeRoy. According to grandson Hugh, LeRoy Ferguson became the Archbishop of the Episcopalian Church in St. Paul, MN and Hugh believes that LeRoy collected and wrote information on the Hotchkin Family. Like much information carried down in a family, some of the above is correct, some is erroneous and some cannot be verified. The compiler has no information on LeRoy, but he was likely born in Chicago.
Frank's grandson, Raymond Harry says that Frank's proper name was Frank Edward but he was often called Edward Frank. The records show that he was Ernest Frank by birth, but was called Frank Ernest. Raymond gives the first name of Frank's second wife, Matilda or Mathilda. Raymond Harry Hotchkin says relatives lived in the state of Minnesota near Ely. He also says that an Uncle of John Francis (brother of Frank Edward?) was an Episcopalian Minister in the Northwest and visited them occasionally. The compiler thinks that this is likely LeRoy Ferguson, son of Frank's second wife. There is no verification on any of this information.
Ernest first appears in the Chicago City Directories in 1895, as a railroad switchman residing at 5141 Winchester. In 1896 the family lives at 345 Leeland and in 1898 they are back at the Winchester address. They appear at this address through 1910. The 1910 directory is the last directory available until 1928. The 1928 Polk Directory says that he is a carpenter and contractor and lives at 5828 S. Artesian, which is also the address of Hugh J., John F. and William M. Hotchkin. A microfilm of some voting records of 1892, has him at 5141 Winchester, Dist. 1, Ward 30, Precinct 34. The records show that he had lived in the precinct 2 months, the county 4 years and the state 4 years. This information likely places the families move from SD to IL in 1888. The death certificate for Frank, calls him Frank E. Hotchkin, born 1 Jun 1859, in El Paso, IL. It says that his father was Eber Hotchkin, and mother unknown. The certificate says that he worked 35 years for R. R. Donally Co. as a carpenter, and last worked in Aug 1936. His father's birthplace is given as Sullivan, NY.
