M, (14 January 1846 - May 1905)

He married Douglas Conway at Morganfield, Union County, KY, USA, in August 1901.3 Charles Eugene Hotchkin Rev. died in May 1905 at Hugo, Choctaw County, OK, USA, at age 59. He was buried in May 1905 at Goodland Cemetery, at Hugo, Choctaw County, OK, USA.

The files at the Three Valley Museum, Durant, OK contain a biography, dated March 1952 and believed to be written by his grand daughter, Dorothy Brose Garlington, gives a great deal of information on Rev Charles and his family. This biographer says that, "Charles Eugene Hotchkin was born 14 January 1846 near the Red River, at Goodwater, Indian Territory, twenty miles northwest of Paris, TX and twelve miles southeast of Soper, OK. His birth was premature and he never became a strong or healthy man. He grew up with the Indian children in the Koonsha Female Academy and learned the Choctaw language as a child, and became one of the best interpreters of that language in the nation. Charles finished his education in Ohio and then returned to the Choctaw Mission and began teaching in the Mission schools. It was at the Mission School that he met Eleanor Copeland, daughter of the Rev C.C. Copeland, Superintendent of Wheelock Female Academy."
After their marriage, Charles and Eleanor made their home, for several years, on a farm with his brother Henry at Livingland. Seeking to have a home for themselves, they cleared a spot of land, four miles southeast of Caddo, in the Caddo Hills and moved there in September 1872. Seven miles south of Caddo they organized a church called Nunnik Takali. As he worked with the Indians at this church, Charles realized that he could be of greater service to them and his Lord if he entered the ministry, so on 9 June 1884 he was ordained to the full ministry of the Gospel in the Presbyterian Church. Charles really loved the Choctaws and preferred to speak their language to his own. He served the tribe for many years as a mission teacher.
His son, Charles F. Hotchkin is quoted in, "Presbyterian Missions in the Southern United States," as saying, "I heard my mother say, she would cook corn bread on Monday morning for my father and he would leave with others on ministerial tours and live on that bread for two weeks at a time." The Chronicles of Oklahoma, says that Ebenezer saw that his sons got a good education and took them to some of the best academies in the North.
A Guardians Transfer Document is on file in the Bryan County Court House, dated 10 August 1905 or 1906 (it has both dates in different places on the document). This document gives the children’s names as Mary P., Charles, Joe F., L. Ella, and Cyrus. A Mortgage Release is attached that released a mortgage dated 8 October 1902 executed by Charles E. Hotchkin to Douglas Hotchkin for the sum of $260.00 and secured by Lot 2 in Block 49 of the Town of Durant, with a 3 room box house and a 3 room frame house and other improvements. Mrs. Douglas Hotchkin of Morganfield, Union County, KY, executes the release. A Quit Claim Deed attached to this release says that Douglas is the widow of Charles E. Hotchkin. One line in the document refers to ...Charles E. Hotchkin being the husband of the Vendor (Douglas Hotchkin); another line says....all my right of homestead and right of dower. There is also a Deed transfer from Douglas to Mary P. Hotchkin, Vol 14, pg 253, 8 August 1903. Dorothy Garlington explains Douglas and these documents as a second wife who could not tolerate missionary life and returned to Morganfield, KY.
Charles died of cancer in Hugo and is buried among his Choctaw friends at the Goodland Cemetery adjacent to the Goodland Children’s Home operated by his father. The Compiler has searched this cemetery and there is no gravestone for Charles.
There is a possibility that Charles mother was Catherine Maria Belden, Born October 20 1819 in Lenox, MA. She died November 3 1848 and is buried in Hugo, OK Her diary which is held by Kay Stietzel refers to a little stranger arriving in her home named Charles Eugene.4,5
