Mr. Donald H. Clapper, 82, of RR No. 4 Box 130, Montrose, Pa. (Retta), and Frostproof, Fla., passed away on Monday Jan. 15, 2007, at The Grove Rehab Center in Lake Wales, Fla. He was born on Oct. 2, 1924, in Sayre, Pa., the son of the late Lloyd and Florence (Howard) Clapper. He was a graduate of the Laceyville High School, class of 1942. He also was a graduate of the Penn State University, earning a bachelor's degree in animal husbandry.
For many years, he was a dairy farmer in Retta, and was also the inventor of the Tractor Land Roller, for which he held three patents. Although he was retired from dairy farming, he was still active on the family farm, where he and his son Dave raised beef cattle, and grew and sold hay.
Mr. Clapper was a member of the Retta United Methodist Church and served on the Official Church Board for several years. He was a member of the Franklin Lodge No. 263 F&AM of Laceyville, Pa., for over 60 years, and was also a 60-year member of the Keystone Consistory, in Scranton, Pa. Don was a member of the Advisory Board of Directors for the Meshoppen Bank. He was also a member of the Shiloh Grange in West Auburn, Pa., where he served many years as the master. After Shiloh Grange, combined with South Auburn Grange No. 1188, he transferred his membership; therefore he was a granger for 55 years. Mr. Clapper was also a Wyoming County 4H Horse Club Leader for 10 years. Don is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Ruth E. Hotchkin; their three children, Debra (Joe) Kavka, of Nicholson, Pa; David (Lil) Clapper of Retta, Pa; and Brenda (Greg) Cable, of Evans, Ga; his grandchildren, Luke, Adam and Bethany Kavka, all of Nicholson, Pa. Also surviving is his sister, Janice Hammond, of Clearwater, Fla; and his brother, Robert (Mary) Clapper, of Retta, Pa; several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jill Kavka, who passed away in 1985; and a brother, Lieutenant Richard Clapper, who passed away in 1960. He will be sadly missed by his family and his many friends.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from the Sheldon Funeral Home, Main Street, Meshoppen, Pa., with the Rev. Richard Spering, of the Retta United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will be in the Retta Cemetery.
Family and friends may call at the funeral home, on Sunday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Masonic services will be conducted by the members of the Franklin Lodge No. 263 F&AM, on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make memorial contributions to the Retta United Methodist Church, C/O Mrs. Audrey Marbaker, RR No. 4 Box 140, Montrose, PA 18801..2 He was buried at Retta Cemetery, at Montrose, Susquehanna County, PA, USA.
