William Augustus Hotchkin
M, (25 November 1877 - 23 May 1938)
William Augustus Hotchkin was born on 25 November 1877 at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA.1 He was the son of Henry N. Hotchkin and Alice J. Burling. William Augustus Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1910 at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Helen, age ?, wd, b NY; stepson William A., 32, S, b NY, machine shop, and 4 other boarders... He resided at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA, in 1910. He married Anna J. Vanden Gyp at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, on 25 March 1914. 1930 census says that she was married at age 35, which would be 6 years prior to the 1930 census. Census says that William was first married at age 32, which would be 20 years prior to the census, so he must have had an earier marriage. Anna is listed in the Rochester City Directory as Anna, wife of William Hotchkin..2 William Augustus Hotchkin registered for the World War I Draft in 1918 while living at Rochester, Monroe County, NY. The registration card gave additional information on him: "He gives his age as 40, born 25 Nov 1877. He is an auto inspector at James Cunningham Ins Co. He gives his wife Anna as nearest relative.". He died on 23 May 1938 at Brighton, Monroe County, NY, USA, at age 60.3,4 He was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA.
William A. first appears in the 1900-01 Rochester City Directory as an elevator man, boarding at 13 6th St, the home of Henry N. Hotchkin. In the 1901 directory, he is a laborer, living at 72 Pennsylvania, where Henry has moved. In 1902-03 his elevator position is given at 25 Exchange Street and he is still living at 72 Penn. The 1903-04 directory has him at the same addresses, but in the 1904-05-06 directories he is living at 19 Sanders, still with Henry N. At the 1906-07 directory, he is called a machinist at 565 St Paul and boarding at 19 Sanders, the home of Henry N. Hotchkin. The 1908 through the 1910 directories have him at the same job and addresses. The 1911-12 directories have him as a boarder at 761 Maple St., which is listed as the home of Helen, widow of Henry N. Hotchkin. Starting in 1912, he is a machinist at 348 Whitney and boarding at 6 Marlow, still the home of Helen. The 1913 through the 1915 directories have him a machinist at 13 Canal St and now living away from Helen, first at 165 Sllye Ter. and then at 160 Merriman. Helen stays at the 6 Marlow address for the years 1913-15 and disappears after the 1915 directory. There is no 1916 directory but in 1917 William is a foreman at 13 Canal St. and living at 104 Bowman with his wife Anna. In 1920-21 his job is the same but he is living at 85 Birr St; where he and his wife stay until his death in 1938. The 1939 directory says, Anna J., widow of Wm A. who died 23 April 1938. There is no evidence that William is the son of Henry except for his long-term residence at the home of Henry and then Henry's widow Helen. The World War I Draft registration gives his age and wife Anne.
