Chester Gurney
Chester Gurney was born on the Crumhorn in the town of Maryland, February 7, 1837, and died in Milford, December 4, 1915. He was one of the three survivors of a family of eight, five sons and three daughters of Jesse and Polly Hotchkin Gurney. One brother, Albert of Binghamton, and a sister, Mrs. Jane Barnes, of Rome, surviving him. In his very early manhood he was a successful school teacher until his first marriage with Miss Martha Burke, when he entered into business life in Schenevus. He came under the notice of the late Hon. David Wilber, about forty years ago, whose ability to select, utilize and hold the talent of his employes accounted largely for his great success in the business world.
He then entered the employ of Mr. Wilber as confidential manager of his vast land interest, moved to Milford and remained in that position until the latter's death. He then entered the employ of the Hon. D. F. Wilber, which position he held for a number of years and removing to Oneonta about seventeen years ago.
He was a man of splendid physique, untiring energy, thorough in his activities and directed by good judgement.
He leaves a legacy better than riches, the record of a well spent life in the service of others.
His friends of Milford include all who know him and more in Oneonta where for years he was a conspicuous figure in its activity.
To mourn a good husband he leave a second wife in Oneonta, and a good father, a daughter, Mrs. W. R. Seeber, in Milford. The funeral was held from the home of his daughter, Monday at 1:30 p.m., the Rev. N.B. Ripley officiating and interment was made in Milford Cemetery.
