William John Heidt

William was born at Bradley, Sullivan County, NY, USA, on 31 January 1889.1 He was the son of William George Heidt and Frances (Frankey) Thompkins Hotchkin. He married Edith Green at Jersey City, Hudson County, NJ, USA, on 25 November 1908. William John Heidt died on 6 June 1973 at Ithaca, Tompkins County, NY, USA, at age 84.1
William was a teacher and principal in Sullivan County schools, and a compositor and linotypist at local newspapers. He bought the Sullivan County Democrat, of Callicoon, in 1915 and sold it in 1927 when the family moved to Ithaca so that they could be near their daughter Edith as she attended college at Cornell. He worked for the Ithaca Journal in 1929; was the City Historian and curator at the DeWitt Museum; and authored a number of pamphlets and articles on his subjects of interest. He was honored by the American Association for State and Local History in 1970.
