RHODA ANN DOWNING'S LIFE MADE STRENUOUS BY WAR AND FIRE.

Mrs. Rhoda Ann Downing, a resident of Tuscola County since 1871, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Asa Root, in Novesta Township on Wednesday, Jan. 19 [1916], after a week's illness. She was 87 years of age.

Rhoda Ann Bennett was born in New York state on Oct. 1, 1828. She was the eldest in a family of eight and only one, T.C. Bennett, a brother, survives her. At the age of 20 years, she united with the Baptist church and continued her membership in that society until her death.

In 1852, she was united in marriage with Hardin C. Downing. Their married life continued for a half century, Mr. Downing passing away 14 years ago on their golden wedding anniversary.

They moved from New York to Ohio in 1856 and came to Cass City in 1871. They continued their residence in this vicinity except for a period of three years which they spent in Texas. They returned here from that state in 1881 just in time to lose practically all their property in the fire of 1881.

Mrs. Downing's life was a strenuous one. Her husband served in the Civil War for three years leaving her with the care and home-making for four little children and her husband's mother. In this she was successful in keeping them comfortable and together. Mrs. Downing was the mother of 13 children, five of whom survive. They are Willis Downing of Detroit, Mrs. Rosa Sweeny of Grayling, Mrs. Frances Hendrick and Mrs. Betsy Hendrick, both of Ellington, and Mrs. Olive L. Root of Novesta. Thirty-seven grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren mourn her death.

Funeral services will be held at the Baptist church at Cass City on Saturday at two o'clock and the interment will be made in Elkland Cemetery. Brief services will be held at the home of Asa Root in Novesta Township at one o'clock.

Hendrick, 44, born MI, father born OH, mother born MI; wife Bessie L. 36, born MI, father born Canada, mother born MI; son Lester K., 19, born MI, father born MI, mother born Canada; son Roland L., 15, born MI, father born MI, mother born Canada; son Orson L., 8, born MI, parents both born MI; son Donald E., 5, born MI, parents both born MI.. He died on 6 March 1972 at Eaton Rapids, Eaton County, MI, USA, at age 96.^3,2 He was buried at Ellington Twp Cemetery, at Ellington Twp, Tuscola County, MI, USA. Buried blk 4, lot 28.

     Talma says that he is a clerk and resides in Bay City, MI.¹

     Ethel E. Barriger was born in April 1879 at Canada. 1900 census. Can't read where she was born as it is crossed out, but parents were both born in Canada. She married Arthur Eugene Hendrick at Ellington Twp, Tuscola County, MI, USA, on 7 December 1898. Married by Rev. J. Mulholland and witnessed by Howard Barringer and Ola Hayes..¹ Ethel E. Barriger. Lester Knittle Hendrick married Marie Eleanor Kenyon on 6 April 1922 at Flint, Genesee County, MI, USA. Lester Knittle Hendrick appeared on the census of 1930 at Grand Rapids, Kent County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: Lester Hendrick, 30, married at 22, born MI, parents born MI, auto body upholsher; wife Marie, 26, married at 18, born In, father born MI, mother born IN; dau Elenora, 6, born MI; dau Maxine, 4 7/12, born MI.. She married John Jameson Hayes at Ellington Twp, Tuscola County, MI, on 23 December 1902.¹ Jennie Aurealia (Ola) Hendrick died on 31 October 1972 at Cass City, Tuscola County, MI, USA, at age 91.² She was buried at Ellington Twp Cemetery, at Ellington Twp, Tuscola County, MI, USA.

     They resided in Ellington, MI.¹

     John Jameson Hayes was born on 3 December 1870 at Gilford Twp, Tuscola County, MI, USA. Age 30 at the 1910 census. He married Jennie Aurealia (Ola) Hendrick at Ellington Twp, Tuscola County, MI, USA, on 23 December 1902.¹ John Jameson Hayes died on 11 May 1959 at Ellington Twp, Tuscola County, MI, at age 88.      Talma wrote in his diary of Jennie, "Jennie, oldest daughter of Nelson and Caroline Hendrick of Calverton, VA died at their home Januuary 19, 1894 of scarlet Fever, aged 20 years, 8 months, and 9 days, was taken sick Dec 29 1893, and not thought to be dangeroulsly ill until the evening before she died. She was born May 7th 1873."¹

     Max Nelson Hendrick was born on 29 April 1879 at Hagar Twp, Berrien County, MI, USA.¹ He was the son of Charles Nelson Hendrick and Caroline Dewey Hendrick. Max died on 25 March 1885 at Hagar Twp, Berrien County, MI, at age 5. Died of water on the brain..¹
