Oronoko Twp. supervisor. Robert G. Feather, 84, longtime resident
of Berrien Springs, currently of Ft. Myers, Florida, passed away December
22, 2002 at Lee Memorial Hospital in Ft. Myers, Florida following a brief
illness.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday,
April 26, 2003 at the Hinchman United Methodist Church of which he was a
lifelong member. Memorials in his name may be make to the Hinchman United
Methodist Church or to the Robert A. [Robert G.] Feather Park in Oronoko
Township.
Mr. Feather was born September 2, 1918 in Hinchman, Michigan to Nelson and
Gertrude Feather. He was a graduate of Berrien Springs High School and Western
Michigan University. He worked on his post graduate studies at the University
of Michigan. He was employed as a teacher at Watervliet High School.
He was a WWII Army veteran where he served as a major in the 103rd Field
Artillery. On November 6, 1942, in Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, he married
Stella Louise Harper. Following his service to his country, he returned
to Hinchman to work the family fruit farm. Their family farm was established
in 1836 and is currently operated under the name Hillside Orchards by daughter
and son-in-law Paul and Sarah Thelen. He served as township supervisor of
Oronoko Township for thirty-three and one-half years. He also served as
chairman of the Berrien County Board of Supervisors from 1959 to 1961 and
again from 1965 to 1967. Upon his retirement on November 12, 1980, the
Oronoko Township Park was named in his honor. He was a life member of the
St. Joseph Elks Lodge 541, the Western Star Lodge 39 of the Grand Lodge Free
and Accepted Masons of Michigan, The Niles Chapter 332 of the Order of the
Eastern Star, the Michigan Horticultural Society, and the Lodge Council Chapter
Consistory of Scottish Rite in the Valley of Grand Rapids.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Louise, a brother Alan Feather of
Granite Bay, California, a daughter Sarah Jane (Paul) Thelen of Berrien
Springs, and two granddaughters, Rebecca Brandt and Erica Thelen.
The family is being served by Legacy Family Funeral Services - Mathew R.
Purchase Chapel, Berrien Springs.
He was buried at Salem Cemetery, at Berrien County, MI, USA.

Then for 2 years he was Principal of the High Scool at Saratoga Springs, NY; in 1891 he became Professor of Mathamatics in the State Normal School at Cortland, NY. In 1893 he was appointed Conductor of Institutes by the Superintendent of Public Instruction of NY state, which position he held for several years. He is the author of a "History of the State of New York," which is a text book generally used in the state. He was a Democrat.1
