William Henry H. Hotchkin

M, (1840 - 7 December 1873)
William Henry H. Hotchkin was born in 1840 at Jackson, Jackson County, MI, USA. He gave his age as 27 or 1840 in Civil War records. He was the son of Abram Eli Hotchkin Sr. and Electa Smith. William Henry H. Hotchkin was a Private, andserved in 19 Regt, NY Battery, during the Civil War. He appeared on the census of 1865 at Wilson, Niagara County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: NY State Census, Jun, 1865; James Hotchkin, can't read age, b Niagara Co; wife Frances, 25 ?, b IL; William H. Hotchkin, brother, 20 ?.. He married Lydia Freeman at Jackson County, MI, USA, on 18 August 1867. Marriage record also found in Michigan Marriages 1851-1875.1 He resided at Rives Twp, Jackson County, MI, USA, in 1869. William Henry H. Hotchkin died on 7 December 1873 at Niagara County, NY, USA. Death date comes from Headstone for Civil War Veterans.. He was buried at North Ridge Cemetery, at Ransomville, Niagara County, NY, USA.

Jackson County Vital Records say that William Hotchkins, age 27, of Rives married Lydia Freeman, age 23 of the same place on 18 August 1869, (place not recorded) by James L. Child M.G. Witnesses; Mrs. A.P. Mead and Miss Bell. His Civil War Military files reveals very little on him. A document called, "Battery Descriptive Book," says that he was 21 years old when he enlisted, 5 feet 10 inches tall, blue eyes, light hair, born in Jackson, MI and was a farmer. He enlisted at Lockport, NY on 25 August 1862 for a 3 year term, the same day as James H. Hotchkin enlisted. This document gives his name as Wm H. H. Hotchkin. He served in the NY 19th Battery and was mustered out on 13 June 1865. William is buried with James H., Abram Eli Jr. and Electa in the North Ridge Cemetery at Cambria, NY. He has a military headstone without any dates and with his name as W. H. H. Hotchkin. He is identified as the brother of James H. in the 1865 census of Niagara Co., NY which lists him as William H. (brother) living with James and James's wife Frances in the 2nd Election District of Wilson, Niagara Co., NY. William's age is very hard to read and the best that can be determined is 21 or 24 (24 would likely be the correct age based on his age at his marriage). This must be Henry, the youngest son of Abram, listed in the 1850 census. The 1850 census of Spring Arbor, Jackson Co., MI gives his name as Henry and his age as 7, which would make his birth as 1842/43. The Hotchkin reunion Notes claim that Henry had a disability and did not serve in the Civil War and that he died and was buried in Mason, MI. The Compiler; however, believes that the 1865 census information and the fact that William and James enlisted on the same day and location is overwhelming evidence that William and Henry are the same person. Several other members of the family bear the name William Henry H. Hotchkin, likely named after the Watertown individual who was a lawyer.

Noah B. Hotchkin1

M, (1812 - 1879)
Noah B. Hotchkin was born in 1812 at Broome County, NY, USA. His birth location is given in his son's death information. He was age 40 at the 1850 census, age 47 at the 1860 census and age 58 at the 1870 census. He was the son of Noah Hodgkin III and Merab Turner. He married Emeline L. Monroe at NY, USA, circa 1824. Noah B. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1840 at Marshall, Oneida County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Noah, 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-30, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 30-40. Male 1835-40, male 1810-20, female 1810-20, female 1800-10. Within a few properties of Henry..
Noah Hotchkin and a partner were arrested and sentenced to State Prison for breaking into a neighbors barn and stealing some goods.2
He was buried in 1879 at Sauquoit Valley Cemetery, at Clayville, Oneida County, NY, USA. He died in 1879 at Paris Twp, Oneida County, NY, USA.3

The Compiler is now convinced that Noah does not belong as a son of Eli, as he had him is the 1991 book, and has assigned him as a son of Noah II and Merab Turner because they have a son not identified in the 1830 census and the name Noah. At the 1840 census Noah B. lived within a few properties of Henry, who we have never identified. It is possible that Henry is brother Harvey. The death certificate of Noah's son Miron gives his father's birth in Broome Co., NY.
Noah first appears in the 1842 Oneida County Grantee Index, where on 15 April he bought a property from Reuben Sweet, Libr 104, p 399. He appears next in the 1851 Grantor Index, where on 25 February he and his wife Emeline make a sale to Lucinda Maxon and W. Burdock, Libr 154, p 353. On 15 May 1877, Emeline L. appears as the Grantee and Chas. P. Rider as Grantor, Libr. 371 p 205.
Noah is listed in the 1860 census of Paris with his wife Emiline and four children. Next door lived his son Charles with the family of Charles Monroe, 46 and wife Harriet, age 50 and Safrona, age 52. In 1870 they live next door to Charles Hotchkin and his wife Mariah. Noah is age 58 and has $300 in personal property, but no real estate. Noah has not yet been found in any earlier census, but it is likely that he is the Noah Hotchkier at Marshall, Oneida Co., NY, p 393 in the 1840 Census.
The death records of Harriet E. with a birth indicated in 1824 leave 12 years between her birth and Charles and it would be likely that there were other children in this period.

George W. Hotchkin

M, (29 March 1816 - 29 November 1903)
George W. Hotchkin was born on 29 March 1816 at Sangerfield, Oneida County, NY, USA. 1900 census gives March 1816, age 64. At the 1860 census, the enumerator wrote in Sangerfield as the place of birth.1 He was the son of Eli Hodgkin and Elizabeth (Betsey) Drury. He married Elizabeth Warner at Albion, Orleans County, NY, USA, on 16 September 1841. Several Rochester newspapers announced their 50 th wedding anniversary giving their marriage date.. George W. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1850 at Albion, Orleans County, NY. The census lists the family as: G. W. Hotchkin, age 34, b NY, saddle and harness maker, wife Elizabeth, age 31, b NY; son James, age 3, b NY, living with him, Joseph Morris, age 24, VT and Abram Anderson, age 25, also saddle makers. 1860 Census, Albion, Orleans Co., NY, Pg 975, George W. Hotchkins, age 41, harness maker, b Sangerfield, NY; wife Elizabeth, age 37, b Ogdensburgh, NY; son James W., age 13, born Albion, NY; dau Elizabeth W., age 9, born Albion, NY; son George R., age 11/12, b Albion, NY 1880 Census, Albion, Orleans Co., NY, George Hotchkin, age 63, b NY, truss maker, father and mother b CT; wife Elizabeth, age ?8, b NY, father b Eng. mother b CT; son Roessle G., truss maker, age 20, b NY 1900 Census, Albion, Albion Twp, Orleans Co., NY, 58 E. State Street, 207 97 14 78; Hotchkin, George W.,age 84, b Mar, 1816, living alone; father b unk, mother b NY.
. George died on 29 November 1903 at Albion, Orleans County, NY, at age 87.2 He was buried at Mount Albion Cemetery, at Albion, Orleans County, NY, USA. Listed as Hotchkiss on cemetery records. they are buried in Site 764 Myrtle..

George W. Hotchkin has been assigned as a son of Eli based on a statement in the 1860 census of Albion that he was born in Sangerfield, NY and that Eli had an unaccounted for son of that age according to the 1820 census and the additional information that George W. Hotchkin had a Oneida Co. real estate transaction with Eli Hotchkin and wife. At this transaction George is the Grantee from Eli, dated 2 November 1839, Libr 94, pg 143. There is also an Oneida Co. transaction of George W. and Elizabeth Hotchkin to Alanson B. Cady on 4 May 1844, Liber 115, pg 106. Ada Marie Peck, A History of the Hanover Society, show a listing of school children in Sangerfield, District #8 and Eli Hotchkin has 5; which could include George W. as Josiah B. is married by the 1830 census and living in Camden, Oneida Co., NY. The 1820 census of Sangerfield gives Eli, four sons, which could also include him. There is also a possibility that George is a son of Noah, as a George W. Hotchkin was a witness to Noah III Will.
The 1860 census of Albion is unusual in that the census taker wrote down the town or city where each individual was born and for George he gave Sangerfield, NY. Obituaries were published on George in the Orleans Republican, 2 December 1903 and the Orleans American, 3 December 1903. These say that he was found dead in his bed at his home on East State Street. The Orleans American refers to him as Dr. Hotchkin, probably because he had been in the Truss business for many years. The obituary calls him an expert in that business. According to the article, two sons survived him; Roselle, of Rochester, engaged in the perfume business and James, of New York City. The Will document says that James lived in New Jersey. The obituary also lists a granddaughter who lives in the west. Reynolds & Flintham at Christ Church conducted the funeral and he was buried at Mt. Albion where his wife Elizabeth was buried. George and Elizabeth are listed on Mt. Albion Cemetery records as Hatchkin and there are no gravestones. The family must have moved to Albion prior to 1847 as the oldest son James was born in Albion in that year. George bought 1/2 acre of land on State Street in 1849 and transferred it to his son George R. the day after Elizabeth died. The 1869 Orleans County Business Directory, published by Child lists George as a maker of saddles, harness and trusses and in business with James J. Mustill on Main Street.
George is listed in the Rochester City Directory of 1875-76 as a spring less truss and supporter maker, with a business address of 145 Powers Bldg and his home in Albion. He continues to appear in the Rochester directories until 1878 when the directory says that he has, “removed to Albion."
There is a G. W. Hotchkin shown in the 1840 census of Chenango, Broome Co., NY with one male under 5, one male 5 to 10, two males 20 to 30, and one male 30 to 40; one female under 5, one female 10 to 15, one female 20 to 30, and one female 30 to 40. George W. Hotchkin is also listed as a Guardian for a minor child in the Will of Noah III, so it is possible that George could be a son of Noah. The Will and the probate advertisement do not give any relationship.
The 1855 Census of Orleans Co, NY, Town of Albion’s has:George W. Hotchkin age 39, born Oneida Co, NY, Saddle/harness maker, Elizabeth M. wife, age 36, born St Lawrence Co, NY, James, son, age 8, born Orleans Co, Elizabeth W., dau, age 4, born Orleans Co., NY.

Leonard Hotchkins

M, (1795 - )
Leonard Hotchkins was born in 1795 at NY, USA. He married Mary Unknown at NY circa 1834. Leonard Hotchkins was a Farmer circa 1850. He appeared on the census of 1850 at Genesee Falls, Wyoming County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Leonard, age 54, b NY, farmer; wife Mary, age 50, b NY; dau Mary H., age 15, b NY; dau Josephine, age 10, b in NY; dau Ellen M., age 7, b NY..

We do not have information on Leonard's parents or background but he must have been one of the earliest to enter New York if census information is true that he was born in the state in 1796. A Leonard Hodgkins appears in Onondaga, Onondaga Co., NY in the 1840 census and the 1880 census. At the 1880 census, he is 74 and his wife Cathern is 72; both born in NY. They have a daughter age 30 and a grand daughter, Maud, age 3. It is unlikely that this is the same person.
