He was a Private & Cook, andserved in Co A, 23rd NY Infantry, during the Civil War. He married Sarah Arminda Rogers at Florida, Orange County, NY, USA, on 25 March 1868.3 He married Louisa Cornelia Seward at Florida, Orange County, NY, on 1 January 1873. Marriage date in her obituary..1,2 He resided at Winfield, Cowley County, KS, USA, in 1885. Samuel Beriah Hotchkin died on 24 March 1922 at Winfield, Cowley County, KS, at age 78.2 He was buried at Union Graham Cemetery, at Winfield, Cowley County, KS, USA.

Samuel married the niece of Hon William H. Seward and they settled in Kansas. In Samuel's Civil War Pension file, he says that he lived in several counties of New York, in Ohio and came to Kansas in 1882, and to Cowley County, Kansas in 1885. By these same records, we know that he was in Ohio in 1873 when his son Edwin was born and back in New York when his next two children were born. Samuel enlisted in the Civil War on 22 April 1861 at Bath, NY and was assigned as a Pvt in Co. A, 23rd NY Infantry Volunteers. He was wounded at the battle of Sharpsburg Md., in the left leg below the knee on 17 September 1862. His discharge occurred at Elmira, NY on 22 May 1863. The enlistment documents give his description as; 5 feet, 8 inches tall, fair complexion, blue eyes, and brown hair. He said that his occupation was Tinner and Student. He gave the name of his first wife, Sarah Rogers and the names of his two boys by that marriage, but didn't give birth or death dates of those children; only saying that they died in infancy. The file gives birth dates of the three children by his second marriage and in an answer to a 1915 inquiry by Department of the Interior; he says that only his two boys are still alive. Clara's middle name has usually been considered as Dot; while Samuel uses the name of Dorothy. Samuel gives his marriage date to his first wife as 25 March 1868 and in Louisa's Widows Application she gives a date for the first marriage as 6 March 1869. It is likely that Samuel's date is more accurate than his second wife’s. The Civil War Pension records give his birth as 7 Jul, 1843, while the 1900 census records it as July 1842.1

The Compiler had searched long and hard to discover what happened to John Jay after the 1850 Census, without results, until his trip to Oklahoma in 1991. In researching Henry W. Hotchkin's time at Boggy Depot, OK and Hannah Mariah's death at the same place, we stopped in at the Civil War Memorial a little bit north of Atoka, OK and they had a document called "Cemetery Survey of Boggy Depot Cemetery." This survey said that John Jay Hotchkin's gravestone said, "John Jay Hotchkin, son of John and Fanny G. Hotchkin, born in Lenox, MA, Feb'y 5 1826, died at Boggy Depot, August 8 1878."
Boggy Depot was a Commissary point for the Confederates and the site of one of the few Civil War battles in Oklahoma. The Compiler has no information on why John Jay was at Boggy Depot except Dorothy Brose Garlington says that he had joined the Hotchkin missionary group as had his couson Ann. According to Lenox Church records, as copied by R. C. Rockwell, John was baptized on 1 June 1826.4

Mary Lucretia Hotchkin was graduated in 1845 from Lenox Academy, Lenox, Berkshire County, MA, USA.      Her birth date is from the 1850 census of Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA and her gravestone. The Christening comes from Little Church on the Hill records. An entry in George Walker's Diary, held by the Hotchkin Public Library, Lenox; shows an entry: Fanny Hotchkin, June 23, 1852 and Mary Hotchkin, June 19, 1852. We don't know what these dates refer to, as we are quite sure of their deaths. She is buried with her parents and brother at the Little Church on the Hill, Lenox, MA.

Frances (Fanny) Gale Hotchkin was graduated in 1845 from Lenox Academy, Lenox, Berkshire County, MA, USA. Hotchkin, born March 30 1829; died Apilr 8 1903.".

Frances and her sister Mary worked all their lives for their father John in the Hotchkin Public Library of Lenox and operated it after their fathers death. The 1850 census of Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA finds her with her parents and gives her age as 20, making her birth in 1829/30. Her baptism is in the records of the Little Church on the Hill.
George Walker's Diary of Lenox has an entry Fanny Hotchkin, June 23, 1852: Mary Hotchkin, June 19, 1852; many of the other nearby entries are deaths but we are quite sure of Marys and Frances death. This could be marriages but there is no other evidence of any marriages and it seems unlikely that they were married in-as-much as they are buried with their parents. Her gravestone gives her birth and death dates.

She married Joshua Francis (James) Hotchkin at NY, USA, on 3 October 1827. Lydia Novill Grant died on 11 November 1857 at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, at age 49. She was buried at Hodge Cemetery, at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA.

Lydia appears to have had a first marriage to Mr. Novill. The 1850 census says that she was age 41, and bible records give a birth date of 2 Dec 1807. Her gravestone has a death date of 11 Nov 1857 and an age at death of 46 years, 10 months, 12 days. Calculating from this gravestone information gives a more likely birth date of 1811. Her obituary in the American Journal dated, 2 December 1857 and the Sullivan County Democrat Republican dated, 27 November 1852 confirms the 1811 date of birth. The 1855 census of Liberty confirms her birth in Liberty. According to Geoffrey Brown, Lauraine Horbak, Sullivan County Genealogist, furnished information that Lydia's name was Lydia B. Novill Grant and that she was the daughter of William Grant and Mary/Polly Yarrington.

The census lists the family as: William Hotchkin living with parents, 23, farmer. .. He left a will on 7 April 1896 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA. The Will which was published left nothing to certain family members as his father had left nothing to him.1 He died in 1899 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY.2,3 He was buried at Hodge Cemetery, at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA.

In the 1850 census of Liberty, Sullivan Co., NY he is listed as a farmer, age 23, and living with his parents in Liberty. At the 1860 census he is living in Neversink, his age is given as age 31, and occupation as a farmer. Living with him is his sister, Sarah Ann. The 1870 census finds William, age 42, with wife Maria, age 36. Much of this census page is unreadable but it appears that there is a Abner Davis individual, insane age 49, a Tommy Smith, age 14 and a Burt or Bert Hotchkin, age 21. This Hotchkin could be his brother Albert, who was born in October 1849. Audrey Carver says that William and Mariah had no children. The 1872-73 Gazetteer and Business Directory of Sullivan Co. lists him as a farmer with 289 acres in Neversink.
