A fortieth wedding anniversary was observed by Mr. and Mrs. William P. Hotchkin on Sunday, April 23, with an open house at St. Mary's Catholic Church hall.
Approximately 145 friends and relatives signed the guest book which was cared for by Mrs. John Harter, a sister-in-law. Guests were greeted by LaRita Hotchkin and John Mortensen, oldest grandchildren. The serving table was decorated by a book shaped cake, baked and decorated by Mrs. Leo Wortman of Newton, a niece.
Lighted candles of ruby in double candelabra were placed on either side of the cake. Mrs. Lee Bullock served the cake. Mrs. Vincent Hotchkin, a sister-in-law and Mrs. Fenton Foster, sister of Mrs. Hotchkin, poured coffee. Mrs. Mary Swart of Spencer, and Mrs. Anna Wortman, sisters of Mrs. Hotchkin presided at the punch bowl. Refreshments of cake, mints, nuts, coffee and ruby punch were served. The mints were made by their daughter, Mrs. Dale Mortensen. Mrs. Alfred Simpson, a niece and Mrs. Rosa Hotchkin, sister-in-law, presided at the gift table.
Mrs. Dora Schultz, Mrs. Elsie Vogt, and Mrs. Mary Baustian, neighbors, were kitchen hostesses. Five grandchildren, Kenneth, Richard and Daniel Mortenson, and Bill and Will Hotchkin gathered trays. Mrs. William Devereux of Adair, sister of Mr. Hotchkin, and Charles T. Hotchkin of Kellogg, brother of Mr. Hotchkin, was bridesmaid and best man at the wedding. Both were present for the open house.
William P. Hotchkin and Elizabeth Harter were married April 20, 1921, at the Catholic Church in Grinnell by the Rev. M. J. Hannon. They farmed until twenty-one years ago when they moved to their present home at 1619- 9th Avenue in Grinnell.
Mr. and Mrs. Hotchkin are the parents of two children, Bernard and Anna Marie Mortensen and twelve grandchildren all living in the Grinnell community. Guests registered from Davenport, Adair, Kellogg, Laurel, Newton, Spencer, Toledo, Malcom and Grinnell.
