Mr. and Mrs. William Hotchkin Mark 40th Wedding Anniversary Sunday

A fortieth wedding anniversary was observed by Mr. and Mrs. William P. Hotchkin on Sunday, April 23, with an open house at St. Mary's Catholic Church hall.

Approximately 145 friends and relatives signed the guest book which was cared for by Mrs. John Harter, a sister-in-law. Guests were greeted by LaRita Hotchkin and John Mortensen, oldest grandchildren. The serving table was decorated by a book shaped cake, baked and decorated by Mrs. Leo Wortman of Newton, a niece.

Lighted candles of ruby in double candelabra were placed on either side of the cake. Mrs. Lee Bullock served the cake. Mrs. Vincent Hotchkin, a sister-in-law and Mrs. Fenton Foster, sister of Mrs. Hotchkin, poured coffee. Mrs. Mary Swart of Spencer, and Mrs. Anna Wortman, sisters of Mrs. Hotchkin presided at the punch bowl. Refreshments of cake, mints, nuts, coffee and ruby punch were served. The mints were made by their daughter, Mrs. Dale Mortensen. Mrs. Alfred Simpson, a niece and Mrs. Rosa Hotchkin, sister-in-law, presided at the gift table.

Mrs. Dora Schultz, Mrs. Elsie Vogt, and Mrs. Mary Baustian, neighbors, were kitchen hostesses. Five grandchildren, Kenneth, Richard and Daniel Mortenson, and Bill and Will Hotchkin gathered trays. Mrs. William Devereux of Adair, sister of Mr. Hotchkin, and Charles T. Hotchkin of Kellogg, brother of Mr. Hotchkin, was bridesmaid and best man at the wedding. Both were present for the open house.

William P. Hotchkin and Elizabeth Harter were married April 20, 1921, at the Catholic Church in Grinnell by the Rev. M. J. Hannon. They farmed until twenty-one years ago when they moved to their present home at 1619- 9th Avenue in Grinnell.

Mr. and Mrs. Hotchkin are the parents of two children, Bernard and Anna Marie Mortensen and twelve grandchildren all living in the Grinnell community. Guests registered from Davenport, Adair, Kellogg, Laurel, Newton, Spencer, Toledo, Malcom and Grinnell.

     Jason Eugene Hotchkin was born on 9 April 1975 at IA, USA.¹ He was the son of Wilbur Arthur Hotchkin and Rebecca Sue Jurgenson. Jason Eugene Hotchkin died on 17 August 1994 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA, at age 19.² He was buried on 20 August 1994 at Hazelwood Cemetery, at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA.

     He died at age 19 of asphyxiation due to hanging at Lions Park in Grinnell, IA and was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell.

     William Bernard Hotchkin was born on 1 May 1952 at IA, USA. Twin of Wilbur Arthur.¹ He was the son of Bernard Eugene Hotchkin and Caroline Genevive Lidtka. William Bernard Hotchkin married Betty J. Risch on 16 May 1999 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA. William Bernard Hotchkin died on 13 September 2009 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, at age 57.¹ He was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery, at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA.

Bill was born on May 1, 1952, in Grinnell, Iowa to Bernard and Caroline Lidtka Hotchkin. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school and schools in Newburg and Grinnell. He later received his high school diploma from Boys Town in Nebraska. Following his education he lived in California and returned to Grinnell and assisted with the family farm operation. He was married to Betty Risch on May 16, 1999 in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and he assisted his twin brother, Wil Hotchkin, with construction and installation of folding doors throughout the Midwest. Bill was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell and he enjoyed woodworking and attending garage sales. He also enjoyed volunteering in group therapy meetings at the local Alcoholic Anonymous organization. Survivors include his wife, Betty Hotchkin of Grinnell; his parents, Bernard and Caroline Hotchkin of Grinnell; his twin brother, Wilbur “Wil” (Deneen) Hotchkin of Grinnell; three sisters, LaRita (Jim) Steiner of Heber Springs, Arkansas, Martha (Wallace) Woods of Village Mills, Texas and Helen Jo Hotchkin of Yuma, Arizona; two brothers, Philip (Beth Fisher) Hotchkin of Grinnell and Edward Hotchkin of Des Moines, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

     Anna Marie Hotchkin was born on 26 June 1926 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA.¹ She was the daughter of William Phillip Hotchkin and Margaret Elizabeth Harter. She married Dale Duane Mortensen circa 1947. Anna Marie Hotchkin died on 23 May 1999 at Newton, Jasper County, IA, USA, at age 72.^2,1 She was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery, at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA.

     Dale Duane Mortensen was born on 4 December 1921 at Battle Creek, Ida County, IA, USA. 1930 census. He married Anna Marie Hotchkin circa 1947. Dale Duane Mortensen died on 4 December 2001 at Marshalltown, Marshall County, IA, USA, at age 80. He was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery, at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA.

     Edna Brooke was born on 25 May 1895 at Jasper County, IA, USA.¹ She married Vincent Depaul Hotchkin at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA, on 30 January 1918. Edna Brooke died on 11 June 1988 at Escondido, San Diego County, CA, USA, at age 93.² She was buried at Hazelwood Cemetery, at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA, USA.
