The census lists the family as: John Neagle, 50, Portrait Painter, born MA; Elizabeth, 19, Phil; Mary, 12, Phil; Jane, 10, PHil; Margaret, 9, Phil; Ellen, 6, Phil; Sally, 17, Phil; Susan, 15, Phil; Garrett, 18, Clerk, Phil.. He died on 17 September 1865 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, at age 68.1 He was buried at Saint Marys Catholic Churchyard, at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA.
He was one of early America's foremost portraitists. In his early years as an artist he was encouraged by the likes of Bass Otis, Charles Wilson Peale, and Thomas Sully. His talents were also appreciated by Thomas Wilson who ran a business painting carraiges and painting ornamental work. Neagle's work is hung at the Second Bank of the United States/Portrait Gallery in Philadelphia, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution. Among his portrait subjects were Gilbert Stuart and Justice George Sharswood. He was the husband of Thomas Sully's niece, Mary C. Sully.

The census lists the family as: Thomas Sully, 76, artist, born Eng; Sarah, 78,no occupation, born Eng; Bleach, 30, lady, PA; Garrett, 29,clerk, PA; Elizabeth, 24, lady, PA; Susan, 22, lady, born PA; Mary, 19, lady. born PA.. He died on 5 November 1872 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA, at age 89. He was buried at Laurel Hill Cemetery, at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA.
He produced around 260 works, and established a reputation as a leading portrait painter. Some of his most famous portraits include Queen Victoria(1838), Washington Irving, Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson. He also painted historical scenes, most notably "Washington Crossing the Delaware" (which now hangs in the Boston Museum of Art) and "The Capture of Major Andre".
