Leo J. Smith was born on 15 December 1910 at Munising, Alger County, MI, USA.1 He was the son of Edgar Almiron Smith and Catherine Rosena Witherell. He married Ethel Marie Umlor at Harbor Springs, Emmet County, MI, USA, on 26 February 1943. Leo J. Smith died on 30 April 1988 at Veterans Hospital, Saginaw, Saginaw County, MI, USA, at age 77.1,2 He was buried at Holy Childhood of Jesus Cemetery, at Harbor Springs, Emmet County, MI, USA.3
Leo was an adopted son who was adopted near age 14 from the Coldwater Orphanage in Michigan. He served in World War II for 38 months. His obituary lists a brother, Emil Sweet of Coldwater, MI; Mrs Alice Scamehorn of White Pigeon MI; and Mrs Marie Mallory of Levering, MI. These must be siblings of his natural parents.

William (Billy) was an adopted son who was adopted very young. His daughter Cathy says that his mother was Margaret Kupkray or Kopkaw, who worked for the Smith's on the farm. She fell in love with a boy who also worked on the farm and had Billy.
He made a career of Army service, which he joined early in World War II. He served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, 3 tours in Vietnam, Libya and England. In the US he was stationed in Long Island, NY, Savannah, GA, San Antonio, TX, Amarillo, TX, and Abilene, TX. During WWII he was an early member of the Air Force and served with a SAC unit; later he worked on crash boats at Long Island. After retirement in 1967 he and his wife and youngest child James moved to Savannah, GA where he supervised an E. R. until a back injury forced him to retire about 1875.
His wife Eunice ran a custom cake and catering business in Savannah after Billy retired.
