July 2lth 1846
My Dear Abitha
I would with gratitude recount the kindness of our heavenly Father manifested to your Grand Father and Me in our Journings which I will here briefley describe. In Canandaigua we took the cars, arrived at Rochester 1 pm. Went in to the City purchased about twenty Dollars worth of books. That evening Monday took a packet boat, arrived at Buffalo Tuesday 6 pm. At 7 took pasage in the DeWitt Clinton bound for Toledo but did not sail until 2 am. Had a pleasant but slow pasage. Thursday about sun down took a Canal boat and pursued our course down the Ma Me canal arrived at Fort Wayne Saturday eve. Stayed there over the sabbath. ...
Monday we again set sail on the Ma me. in a boat bound to Lafayette where we arrived Tuesday evening. There we expected to find a boat bound to Terre Haute; boats had gone out the evening before and more were hourly expected. But the water had fallen and none arrived. Had boats run, we could have got their in a short time but we had to take the stage after waiting two nights and one day. We had a fine view of the flourshing village, but we left it without regret for our round about passage in the stage of one hundred 25 miles we arrived at Terre Haute Friday about 9 p.m. ...
We spent over two weeks in Terre Haute then left for your uncle Theron's. We took the stage Tuesday morning about two o'clock bound to St. Louis a distance of 188 miles which was accomplished in forty hours. We then took a steam boat which was ready and proceded up the Mississippi 190 miles to Quincy. Arrived there Thursday near sundown. Friday morning went to Mendon 19 miles from Quincy. ...
