Joseph Harper appeared on the census of 1920 at Pleasant View Twp, Emmet County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: Joseph Harper, 54, na 1895, England; wife Sophia, 44, born MI; dau Ellen Grace, 16, born Mi; son Richard Joseph, 14, born MI.. He died on 5 January 1934 at Pleasant View Twp, Emmet County, MI, at age 67. Cemetery records. He was buried at Lakeview Cemetery, at Harbor Springs, Emmet County, MI, USA. Sec J, Lot 19.

     It is rather strange that Delbert Harper appears in the 1930 census as age 14, a son of Joseph and Sophia but does not appear in the 1920 census of any other location that the Compiler can find.

Jr, 8, born GA; James M., 3, born GA. Page 300, dated 22 Aug 1870, Monroe Co, Foryth, GA. There is no way of being sure that this the correct family..      Information on the Sykes family is from notes furnished by Vines Edwards. The original source and reliabilty is unknown. An internet genealogy has his birth date as 14 Nov 1830 with father Joseph Sikes, born 1783, died 1862 and mother Elizabeth Jones, born 1790, died 1848.

He married Lelah Electra Ingram at GA, USA, circa 1885. George Washington Sykes Jr. appeared on the census of 1910 at Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL, USA. The census lists the family as: George W. Sykes, 44, married twice, born GA, parents born GA, carpenter for railroad; wife Leila, 43, married once for 26 years, born GA, parents born GA; daughter Berta, 20, single, born GA, dressmaker for department store; daughter Maud, 16, single, saleslady for department store.. He died on 28 April 1926 at Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL, at age 64.1,2 He was buried at Elmwood Cemetery, at Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL, USA.3

     George W. and his wife Leila or Lelah E. are listed in the Macon City Directories for the years 1901 through 1907. In 1901-02 he is with Becker Furniture Co. and they reside at 619 1st St., Macon, GA; residing with them are daughter Rosa, who works at Newman Millinery Co. and daughter Annie and her husband Quarles Edwards who works as a bookkeeper at Becker Furniture on Cotton Ave. The 1903 Directory describes George as a clerk, but doesn't give the employer and the family lives at 509 Arch St. Annie and P.Q. Edwards are still with the family but Rosa is no longer listed. The 1904 Directory has both George and P.Q. and their wife’s at the same address. By 1905 the two families are living at separate addresses; George at 856 3rd St. and P.Q. at 568 1st St. The 1906 directory has George and Lelah E. living at 753 Plum St. with their daughters Berta, Ellona, Maude and Rosa. The 1907 Directory is the last listing for the Sykes who still live at the Plum St. address. At this time Ellona is listed as E. Ellona a clerk at the Union Dry Goods Co. George, Lelah and their daughter Berta appear in the 1915 City Directory of Birmingham, AL. They were not in the 1908 directory and there were no preserved directories for the years 1910-1914. They were listed for the years 1916 through 1926, the year in which George died. Berta was listed for 1927 and 1928 but not after that year.

Arrie Berta Sykes died on 17 January 1954 at Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL, USA, at age 64.1 She was buried at Elmwood Cemetery, at Birmingham, Jefferson County, AL, USA. Site #33668.2

     Berta never married. She is buried with her parents with her first name spelled Arrie. Her Will was written on 24 Feb., 1950 and filed for Probate on 25 Jan., 1954, File #105, pg 560. It left $5.00 each to her sister Annie Sykes Edwards, Maude Sykes Maddox and Rosa Sykes Valley; the balance of her estate to her niece and nephew, Rosa Edwards Billingsley and Vines P. Edwards. The estate consisted of stocks, bonds, cash and notes. A considerable amount of jewerly was left to Rosa as her sole property. My wife Sarah Catherine Hotchkin got the ring after Rosa death. At the 1930 census she is living with Vines Preston Edwards.
