HAS PASSED BEYOND AFTER
LONG ILLNESS, AGED 74

RESIDENT OF GLADWIN COUNTY 47 YEARS
FIRST DOCTOR IN THE COUNTY

Dr. Russell E. Finch, pioneer doctor of Gladwin, passed away April 28, 1922, aged 73 years and 11 months. He had been in poor health a number of year, but although he was unable to leave his office for some time, he prescribed for a large number of patients who called on him up to a few days before his death.

Russell E. Finch was born May 28, 1848, in the state of New York, and came to Michigan with his parents when 15 years of age, settling at Saginaw, later coming to Gladwin county. He was married to Nora Morgan, March 5, 1893, who has passed on before. Two daughters survive them, Mrs. Wanda Brunni and Erma Finch, both of Gladwin, also two sisters, Mrs. LaGrow of Saginaw and Mrs. Samuel Graves of Linden.

Funeral services were held Saturday at the Pentecostal Mission and interment took place in Highland cemetery. The services were conducted by Mrs. Hill, who paid tribute to the memory of Dr. Finch in appropriate terms, giving him due credit for great serviee rendered in administering to the sick.

Dr. Finch was the oldest physician in Gladwin county, both in age and in pratice. He first came to Gladwin county July 10, 1875, when the country was almost a howling wilderness. The journey at that time was made from Saginaw by Flint and Pere Marquette railway to Sanford, where a livery team was hired to take him to "Sixteen," now known as Edenville. From there he secured another livery to take him to the "Brayton farm," now known as the Lennon farm on the Sugar river, then occupied by his step-father and mother. The trip occupied about 12 hours, costing $15, and was made with the peril of passing through burning forests and necessitated repairing bridges in places.

The doctor made his office at the farm a few years, having an extensive pratice among the lumber camps and early settlers. At first his nearest postoffice was Edenville, an all day trip to get his mail, and a year or so after a postoffice was established at the "Steel farm," now the McClure farm, when mail was received occasionally. In those early times it frequently took all day to travel 15 miles over roads which have since been placed among the best roads of the county. In 1879 he established his office at Cedar, now Gladwin, the new county-seat, and from that time until his death was a resident of this city and engaged in the pratice of his profession, having a large pratice and being very successful.

Dr. Finch came to Saginaw in 1860 when the city was a small place. He gained much medical experience from his father who was an old-time doctor, then studied and praticed four years with Dr. S. Reinhardt of Saginaw, 1871-74. He took lectures in the post-medical course of the Michigan College of Medicine at Detroit, 82-84-85, and joined the State Electric Medical and Surgical society of the state of Michigan in March, 1886, and up to his death was a member thereof in good standing, and was appointed member of the World's Congress Auxiliary Eclectic Physicians, Chicago. For many years he also filled the office of county agent of the state board of corrections and charities including probation office.

Dr. Finch injured a leg while at play at school and at the age of 15 lost one hand on a shingle saw. The first accident necessitated the use of crutches many years, until he invented an attachment some 20 years ago by which he was able to walk with a cane, and an iron hook was used in place of the lost hand. With these handicaps, however, he drove spirited horses over all kinds of roads of early days, in dark nights and in the worst weather, ministering to the sick. He also earned money by his own efforts to attend school and complete his medical studies. For a number of years he was the only doctor in Gladwin and faithfully he served the sick in the early days many times without hope of fee or reward. In later years he also was always ready to assist when called upon, so long as he was able. Doctor Finch will long be remembered for faithful service rendered in behalf of suffering humanity and it may well be said of him that in his chosen profession he did what he could to aid his brother man. Gladwin County Record dated 5-4/1922. He was buried at Highland Cemetery, at Gladwin, Gladwin County, MI, USA.
