The exact date of birth comes from a book, Makers of Philadelphia.1 He married Mary Chester Sully, daughter of Lawrence Sully and Sarah Annis, in May 1826 at PA, USA. John Neagle appeared on the census of 1850 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA. The census lists the family as: John Neagle, 50, Portrait Painter, born MA; Elizabeth, 19, Phil; Mary, 12, Phil; Jane, 10, PHil; Margaret, 9, Phil; Ellen, 6, Phil; Sally, 17, Phil; Susan, 15, Phil; Garrett, 18, Clerk, Phil.. He died on 17 September 1865 at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, at age 68.1 He was buried at Saint Marys Catholic Churchyard, at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA.

     He was one of early America's foremost portraitists. In his early years as an artist he was encouraged by the likes of Bass Otis, Charles Wilson Peale, and Thomas Sully. His talents were also appreciated by Thomas Wilson who ran a business painting carraiges and painting ornamental work. Neagle's work is hung at the Second Bank of the United States/Portrait Gallery in Philadelphia, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, and the National Portrait Gallery of the Smithsonian Institution. Among his portrait subjects were Gilbert Stuart and Justice George Sharswood. He was the husband of Thomas Sully's niece, Mary C. Sully.

Neagle, 23, born PA, living in boarding house.. She married Samuel Fitch Hotchkin Rev. at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, on 1 June 1869. Information on this marriage comes from the John Neagle family history and Marriage Records attached.. Sarah (Sallie) Sully Neagle died on 23 February 1898 at Bustleton, Philadelphia County, PA, USA. Her obituary in The Bucks County Gazette on 3 March 1898 said, "Mrs Sarah Sully Hotchkin, the wife of Rev. Samuel F. Hotchkin, rector of St. Lukes"s P. E. Church, Bustleton, died on Wednesday morning of last week at her home, after a prolonged illness, aged 64 years. Mrs. Hotchkin was rhe daughter of the late John Neagle, the well known artist, and a granddaughter of that world-famed portrait painter, the late Thomas Sully.. She was buried at Saint Lukes Episcopal Churchyard Cemetery, at Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, PA, USA.

     According to her Obituary, she was the daughter of a well known Artist, John Neagle, and granddaughter of that world famous portrait artist Thomas Sully.
Her obituary says that her middle name is Sully (her grandfathers surname).
