William Hotchkin

M, (21 April 1830 - 20 January 1889)
William Hotchkin was born on 21 April 1830 at Spalding, Lincolnshire County, England. 1860 census, Rich Twp, IL. gives birth as 1819 Birth location comes from son's death certificate. He was the son of Henry Hotchkin and Hannah Readman. He married Ellan Quinn circa 1851. William Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1860 at Rich Twp, Cook County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: 1860 Census, Rich, Cook Co., IL, pg 919, William Hotchkin, 40, farmer, $1400, $300, b Eng; Wife Ellan, 33, b Eng; son Benjamin, 9, b IL; son Henry, 7, b IL; dau Mary A., 2, b IL; dau Ella, 1, b IL.. He died on 20 January 1889 at Calumet City, Cook County, IL, USA, at age 58.1 He was buried at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, at Frankfort, Will County, IL, USA.

The family lived in Rick Twp., Cook Co., IL. They had eight children, 6 still living at the time of the 1900 census. They probabily had lived in IL more than 42 years as all children were born there. The Death Certificates of his sons Benjamin and Oliver gives his parents names and birth locations. He is likely a brother of John Hotchkin of Jasper Co., IA. William was not with the family at the 1900 Census. John Adair Hotchkin wrote the complier with additional information. He says that there were additional sons Henry, born 1855; Allen, born 1859 and John, born 1868. Allen would conflict with Ella J. so he was not entered. Hulver is likely Oliver as dates agree.

M, (25 November 1877 - 23 May 1938)
William Augustus Hotchkin was born on 25 November 1877 at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA.1,2 He was the son of Henry Nelson Hotchkin and Alice J. Burling. William Augustus Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1910 at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Helen, age ?, wd, b NY; stepson William A., 32, S, b NY, machine shop, and 4 other boarders... He resided at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA, in 1910. He married Anna J. Vanden Gyp at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, on 25 March 1914. 1930 census says that she was married at age 35, which would be 6 years prior to the 1930 census. Census says that William was first married at age 32, which would be 20 years prior to the census, so he must have had an earier marriage. Anna is listed in the Rochester City Directory as Anna, wife of William Hotchkin..3 William Augustus Hotchkin registered for the World War I Draft in 1918 while living at Rochester, Monroe County, NY. The registration card gave additional information on him: "He gives his age as 40, born 25 Nov 1877. He is an auto inspector at James Cunningham Ins Co. He gives his wife Anna as nearest relative.". He died on 23 May 1938 at Brighton, Monroe County, NY, USA, at age 60.4,5 He was buried at Mount Hope Cemetery, at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA.

William A. first appears in the 1900-01 Rochester City Directory as an elevator man, boarding at 13 6th St, the home of Henry N. Hotchkin. In the 1901 directory, he is a laborer, living at 72 Pennsylvania, where Henry has moved. In 1902-03 his elevator position is given at 25 Exchange Street and he is still living at 72 Penn. The 1903-04 directory has him at the same addresses, but in the 1904-05-06 directories he is living at 19 Sanders, still with Henry N. At the 1906-07 directory, he is called a machinist at 565 St Paul and boarding at 19 Sanders, the home of Henry N. Hotchkin. The 1908 through the 1910 directories have him at the same job and addresses. The 1911-12 directories have him as a boarder at 761 Maple St., which is listed as the home of Helen, widow of Henry N. Hotchkin. Starting in 1912, he is a machinist at 348 Whitney and boarding at 6 Marlow, still the home of Helen. The 1913 through the 1915 directories have him a machinist at 13 Canal St and now living away from Helen, first at 165 Sllye Ter. and then at 160 Merriman. Helen stays at the 6 Marlow address for the years 1913-15 and disappears after the 1915 directory. There is no 1916 directory but in 1917 William is a foreman at 13 Canal St. and living at 104 Bowman with his wife Anna. In 1920-21 his job is the same but he is living at 85 Birr St; where he and his wife stay until his death in 1938. The 1939 directory says, Anna J., widow of Wm A. who died 23 April 1938. There is no evidence that William is the son of Henry except for his long-term residence at the home of Henry and then Henry's widow Helen. The World War I Draft registration gives his age and wife Anne.
His middle name is given at World War I Draft Registration.

He lived with his mother Susan, at 7 Harrison Pl, during the late 1880's. At the 1910 census, William and his children are living with Leana's father at 14 Douw St, Troy, NY along with their son George. William and Leana must have been divorced after 1910 because at the 1920 census he is living in the Bronx with a wife Jessie and Leana is living in Troy with her mother; however, Lena still is listed as being married in the 1910 and 1920 censuses.
The name also seems to be used in reverse, George William.

William Henry H. Hotchkin

M, (1840 - 7 December 1873)
William Henry H. Hotchkin was born in 1840 at Jackson, Jackson County, MI, USA. He gave his age as 27 or 1840 in Civil War records. He was the son of Abram Eli Hotchkin Sr. and Electa Smith. William Henry H. Hotchkin was a Private, andserved in 19 Regt, NY Battery, during the Civil War. He appeared on the census of 1865 at Wilson, Niagara County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: NY State Census, Jun, 1865; James Hotchkin, can't read age, b Niagara Co; wife Frances, 25 ?, b IL; William H. Hotchkin, brother, 20 ?.. He married Lydia Freeman at Jackson County, MI, USA, on 18 August 1867. Marriage record also found in Michigan Marriages 1851-1875.1 He resided at Rives Twp, Jackson County, MI, USA, in 1869. William Henry H. Hotchkin died on 7 December 1873 at Niagara County, NY, USA. Death date comes from Headstone for Civil War Veterans.. He was buried at North Ridge Cemetery, at Ransomville, Niagara County, NY, USA.

Jackson County Vital Records say that William Hotchkins, age 27, of Rives married Lydia Freeman, age 23 of the same place on 18 August 1869, (place not recorded) by James L. Child M.G. Witnesses; Mrs. A.P. Mead and Miss Bell. His Civil War Military files reveals very little on him. A document called, "Battery Descriptive Book," says that he was 21 years old when he enlisted, 5 feet 10 inches tall, blue eyes, light hair, born in Jackson, MI and was a farmer. He enlisted at Lockport, NY on 25 August 1862 for a 3 year term, the same day as James H. Hotchkin enlisted. This document gives his name as Wm H. H. Hotchkin. He served in the NY 19th Battery and was mustered out on 13 June 1865. William is buried with James H., Abram Eli Jr. and Electa in the North Ridge Cemetery at Cambria, NY. He has a military headstone without any dates and with his name as W. H. H. Hotchkin. He is identified as the brother of James H. in the 1865 census of Niagara Co., NY which lists him as William H. (brother) living with James and James's wife Frances in the 2nd Election District of Wilson, Niagara Co., NY. William's age is very hard to read and the best that can be determined is 21 or 24 (24 would likely be the correct age based on his age at his marriage). This must be Henry, the youngest son of Abram, listed in the 1850 census. The 1850 census of Spring Arbor, Jackson Co., MI gives his name as Henry and his age as 7, which would make his birth as 1842/43. The Hotchkin reunion Notes claim that Henry had a disability and did not serve in the Civil War and that he died and was buried in Mason, MI. The Compiler; however, believes that the 1865 census information and the fact that William and James enlisted on the same day and location is overwhelming evidence that William and Henry are the same person. Several other members of the family bear the name William Henry H. Hotchkin, likely named after the Watertown individual who was a lawyer.

William Henry Harrison Hotchkin

M, (12 September 1840 - December 1883)
William Henry Harrison Hotchkin was born on 12 September 1840 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, USA.1,2 He was the son of Josiah Bacon Hotchkin and Keziah D. Austin. William Henry Harrison Hotchkin was a Asst Quarter Master, andserved in 8th NY State Militia, during the Civil War. He married Julia Pratt Cooke at New York City, New York County, NY, USA, on 22 August 1861. The History of Jefferson County claims that the marriage was on 22 April 1861.3,1 William Henry Harrison Hotchkin was employed from 1862 to 1866 at Auburn, Cayuga County, NY, USA, as as a Keeper at the Auburn State Prison. He appeared on the census of 1870 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, William H., age 30, b NY, editor of newspaper, $400; Julia P., age 30, b NY; son William H., age 8, b NY; son Walter B., age 5, b NY.. He died in December 1883 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, at age 43. No one know his death date as he went missing in December 1883 based on a newspaper article in a January 6 1884 New York Times..4 He was buried . His body was never recovered and the exact date of his death is unknown..

William is listed in the Watertown City Directory, in 185960 as a student of languages, living with his widowed mother, Mrs. K. Hotchkin, at 10 Clay St. He and his wife, Julia Pratt Cooke are mentioned in the Benjamin Cleveland Family Genealogy. This book confirms their marriage date of 22 Apr 1861. William’s complete name and his marriage to Julia Pratt Cooke is also listed in their son’s marriage license to Mabel Lord Hall. William was a Lt. and QM in the 8th NY National Guard, Washington Greys, for 3 months. At the first Bull Run battle he had charge of the brigades’ baggage and in the records he claims to have brought it all back without loss. He was commissioned between 25 Apr 1861 and 24 May 1861 and was discharged on 2 Aug 1861.
In 1862 he was appointed Keeper in the Auburn State Prison, a job he held until 1866 when he became a reporter for the World. He studied law in Watertown and was admitted to the bar in 1872, was elected Justice of the Peace in 1879, and served until 1883. According to the Rochester Union Advertiser, he was admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.
Julia’s Widows Pension Application contains a most interesting story about William’s death. She says that she does not know when, where or under what circumstances her husband died. She and William were living together in Watertown in June 1883 with their three children, William, Walter and Caro, when her son William died very suddenly. As a result, she suffered a severe attack of illness and went to NYC with her daughter and son Walter to visit her parents and recuperate. In the early part of November 1883 her husband left Watertown to visit her in NYC and never arrived. She found that his railroad ticket had been taken up on the train but no other information could be found. They visited all the hospitals, notified the police and advertised in the newspapers but never heard a word, and until this date, 29 years later, they had heard nothing. Malona S. Hotchkin, William’s half sister, in her statement said that he was living with her then and he had been in poor health for a year or more. She says that he left the house to get some medicine and never returned. She subsequently heard from the husband of her niece, Carrie A. Moffett that he had seen William on the train at Richland, NY, a rail station between Watertown and New York City. A William Allen, who was distantly related to William by marriage, claims to have seen him on the train at Camden, NY. “He was wild and haggard in appearance and muttered incoherently,” said William. Julia believed that her husband, William was planning on the trip to New York to collect $850.00 owed him by Scott & Co of 721 Broadway, and an attorney by the name of William Roseblautt. This is likely the same Scott that Charles G. Hotchkin was asking for money, from St. Louis, MO, and it is believed that these were estate funds. The family also filed documents in the Surrogate Court, dated 28 May 1884 petitioning for the settlement of his estate, saying that he disappeared on 7 Nov 1883. The petition says that for a long time previously, he had been in feeble condition and taking morphine and chloral in large quantities for pain. It was claimed that he left the home of his mother, Kezia, with his night shirt under his coat, saying that he was going to a physicians house on the corner for medicine.
According to several newspaper articles, William excelled at the game of Chess.5,6,7

William Henry O. Hotchkin

M, (7 May 1874 - 11 December 1890)
William Henry O. Hotchkin was born on 7 May 1874 at Newfane, Niagara County, NY, USA. He was the son of Abram Eli Hotchkin Jr. and Harriet Maham. William died on 11 December 1890 at Newfane, Niagara County, NY, at age 16. This may be a burial date as it comes from the Cemetery Card. It says that he died from Influenza.Other evidence in bible records of the Schmidt support this as a death date..1 He was buried at North Ridge Cemetery, at Ransomville, Niagara County, NY, USA. He is buried with his parents. Sec 1b, Lot 61.

The 1875 census of Newfane, Niagara Co., NY gives his age as 1/12 (born May) and his name as William; this seems to be another example of alternately using the names Henry and William.

William Little Hotchkin1

M, (16 April 1798 - 8 September 1866)
William was born at Barkhamsted, Litchfield County, CT, USA, on 16 April 1798. His birth date is "written in" on the 1855 NY state census.. He was the son of Hubbard Hotchkin and Alethea Little. He married Hannah Gilbert at NY, USA. He resided at DeWitt, Onondaga County, NY, USA, in 1818. William Little Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1830 at Manlius, Onondaga County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: William Hodgkin, Pg 385; 1 male under 5, 1 male 20-30, 1 male 30-40, 1 male 40-50, 1 female under 5, 1 female 20-30, 1 female 30-40.. William died on 8 September 1866 at DeWitt, Onondaga County, NY, at age 68. His obituary says that he died on the 8th of heart diease in Dewitt..2 He was buried at Messina Springs Cemetery, at DeWitt, Onondaga County, NY, USA.

The 1850 census of DeWitt, Onondaga Co., NY found William a farmer and living with wife Hannah and 3 children; by the 1860 census of DeWitt, Onondaga Co., he and his wife Hannah are living with their son Jerome and wife Rosette; son Addison and Hannah's sister Ann Gilbert. The Syracuse City Directories describe him variously as an express man, cart man or driver. According to records of the Messina Springs Cemetery, he is buried with his wife Hannah and his parents Hubbard and Alathea. A personal inspection of the cemetery by the Compiler, finds his gravestone next to the Alvord Family monument but the rest of the family's stones have been knocked over or removed. Hardly a stone is undamaged in the entire cemetery. His son Jerome's obituary says that William came from Connecticut in 1818 and settled on a large tract of land, which was partially wilderness at that time.
William was involved in several real estate transactions in Onondaga County. The first was in 1861 when he and his father Hubbard, acquired a property from T. Gilbert. That same year, William acquired five other properties from E. B. Perkins, G. Gregg, H. Hotchkin, and A. Hotchkin. The H. Hotchkin could be either his father or sister Hannah and the A. Hotchkin is likely Ashley Hotchkin. William is mentioned in the Will of his son Jerome and called William Jerome Hotchkin.
There seems to be a male child miising according to the 1830 census. He would have been born 1800 to 1810.
Generally in the censuses the middle initial looks like L. Jerone is found only in his son's Will.

William Mead Hotchkin

M, (12 October 1828 - 1899)
William Mead Hotchkin
William Mead Hotchkin was born on 12 October 1828 at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY, USA. He was the son of Joshua Francis (James) Hotchkin and Lydia Novill Grant. He married Mariah Smith at Sullivan County, NY, USA, circa 1850. William Mead Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1850 at Liberty, Sullivan County, NY. The census lists the family as: William Hotchkin living with parents, 23, farmer. .. He left a will on 7 April 1896 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA. The Will which was published left nothing to certain family members as his father had left nothing to him.1 He died in 1899 at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY.2,3 He was buried at Hodge Cemetery, at Neversink, Sullivan County, NY, USA.

In the 1850 census of Liberty, Sullivan Co., NY he is listed as a farmer, age 23, and living with his parents in Liberty. At the 1860 census he is living in Neversink, his age is given as age 31, and occupation as a farmer. Living with him is his sister, Sarah Ann. The 1870 census finds William, age 42, with wife Maria, age 36. Much of this census page is unreadable but it appears that there is a Abner Davis individual, insane age 49, a Tommy Smith, age 14 and a Burt or Bert Hotchkin, age 21. This Hotchkin could be his brother Albert, who was born in October 1849. Audrey Carver says that William and Mariah had no children. The 1872-73 Gazetteer and Business Directory of Sullivan Co. lists him as a farmer with 289 acres in Neversink.
