Lloyd Hotchkin

M, (May 1870 - )
Lloyd was born at El Paso, Woodford County, IL, USA, in May 1870. Age 2 at the 1870 census.. He was the son of Celia Ann Bayne. Lloyd Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1900 at Peoria, Peoria County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: LLoyd Hotchkin, age 30, b 5-1870 in IL; living with his mother Celia A. Hodge..

The 1900 census of Peoria Twp., Peoria Co., IL finds him living with his mother, Celia A. Hodge, at 219 Reed St. Peoria, IL. He is also with her at the 1870 census of El Paso, IL, Dwelling # 126, Fam #111. His age is given as 2 at this census and also in the house is Frank, age 11. This is Frank Edward, son of Eber Hall Hotchkin and Celia. Eber died in 1865 at the Confederate prison in Florence, SC so Lloyd can not be his son. Lloyd appears in the Peoria, IL City Directories for the years 1896 through 1905 as a Switchman on the CRI & P Railroad and boarding at 702 S. Adams in 1896 through 1899; while in 1904 and 1905 he was living at 939 Warner and then 117 Howett.
The Decatur Daily Review says that the federal grand jury has indicted Lloyd for throwing a railroad switch in front of a passenger train. The District Attorney Milcrist says that the list will likely increase upon the filing of the final report of the grand jury, but Lloyd Hotchkin is the man that the Illinois Central people were positive threw a switch in front of a passenger train on June 20 with the intent of wrecking it. Compiler comment, it looks, as there was a great deal of labor unrest at this time with the railroad.1

"I was born in Ravia, Oklahoma-- or the Indian Territory-- as it did not become a state until 1907, and was named by my grandmother-- Lucy Pearl; Lucy was my aunts name. Grandmother gave me a pair of red shoes every birthday while we lived in Oklahoma. My dad was in the Post Office- always did office work. We moved to Vallejo, California in 1908 or 1909 where he worked in the Navy Yard office at Mare Island. I broke my arm that year playing hopscotch. Two years later our family moved to Klamath Agency, Indian Reservation, Oregon, 30 miles north of Klamath Falls. Dad was Chief Clerk at the Agency. There were no white schools and my Aunt Dell moved out there from Oklahoma and taught at a Day School off the reservation."

This seems to be the better death date as an Indenture date 16 March 1925 turns over some land to her heirs. This date is given in Schmidt family bible records.. She was buried . Likely she is buried with her husband at Rural Cemetery, Hornell, Steuben County, NY, but there is no proof of this.

Hagadorn (note difference in spelling) are found at the 1920 census in Steuben Co., NY. Niagara County land records show a document that is probabily the settlement of her estate after her death. "This indenture made the sixteenth day of March in the year Nineteen Hundred and Twenty Five, between, Alice Kilmer, Artimus Hotchkin Maggie Hotchkin, his wife, and John Hotchkin and Libbie Hotchkin, his wife, all of the town of Porter, County of Niagara and the State on New York, Juliette Kilmer of Buffalo, Erie County, New York and Mable E.
