Jerrold Lee Hotchkin

M, (22 September 1928 - 12 July 2005)
Jerrold Lee Hotchkin
Jerrold was born at Jackson, Jackson County, MI, USA, on 22 September 1928. Jerry is the Compilers brother.. He was the son of Franklin Elwyn Hotchkin and Margaret Josephine Smith. He married Grace Marie Stoner at Lansing, Ingham County, MI, USA, on 3 April 1948.1,2 Jerrold was divorced from Grace Marie Stoner at Calhoun County, MI, USA, on 29 December 1950. He married Faith Hope Schurman at Lansing, Ingham County, MI, on 23 April 1953. He resided at Odessa, Ector County, TX, USA, in 2004. Jerrold Lee Hotchkin died on 12 July 2005 at Odessa, Ector County, TX, at age 76. My brother died at about 5:30 pm, Tuesday, July 12 of advanced Alzheimer’s disease. He fought hard against this terrible disease. The last time that I saw him was in the summer of 2002 when I invited him to join my sons and me on a marlin-fishing trip to Los Cabo, Bahi, Mexico.
His obituary appeared in the Odessa American on Thursday July 14, 2005 and said, " Odessa, Jerold (proper is Jerrold, I hope that my obituary at least gets my name correct) Lee Hotchkin, 76, of Odessa, a Christian Minister, died Tuesday, July 12, 2005 at Seabury Nursing Center. Services will be at 2;00 pm, Friday at Odessa Home Chapel with the Rev. Randy Demetro officiating. Private burial will be held. He was born in Jackson MI. He was an Army Veteran. Survivors are wife Faith Hope Hotchkin of Odessa, sons Robert Hotchkin of Corpus Christi and John F. Hotchkin of Bridgeport; daughter Patrice Smith of Odessa; brother Edgar Hotchkin of Pasadena, Calif; seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.". He was buried at Andrews County Cemetery West, at Andrews, Andrews County, TX, USA.

The Compilers brother Jerry has lived in west Texas since 1968. He has been in construction, carpet retailing, auto body repair and harvesting. Jerry served in the Army in Okinawa during 1955 and 1956. In 1980 Jerry and Faith decided that they wanted to become Ministers. After their study program, they opened Faith Christian Outreach on the site of their mobile home park where they live. They supplied food and clothes to the hungry and disadvantaged. The church was closed in 1990 when they went full-time as missionaries and evangelists. For many years he ran a ministry in Mexico, where it was dangerous for non-catholic to operate. Jerry and Faith traveled and ministered in Jamaica, Mexico, Pakistan and India spreading the gospel. Jerry had said that one of their greatest adventures was spending two weeks in Albania. They also spent a lot of time in their motorhome ministering to churches in the United States.
Jerry had a busy and active life. During our young life, when we were both living with our parents, he was an auto painter and auto body repairman. After he moved from Lansing MI to Andrews, TX he bought and fixed up homes and ran a carpet store.
My last vist with my brother was in 2002 or 2004 when I invited him to join myself and my boys and friend on our annual Marlin fishing trip to Los Cabos, Mexico. He died in July 2005.

After their marriage they went to Staten Island for a short period where he did general jobbing around the factory at the New York Iron Printing Company at Factoryville, Staten Island. The firsday of that year he moved to Grinnell, Iowa, and here entered a farm but was cheated out of it. This farm was the Adolph Altemeir farm near Newburg, Iowa. He worked the firs year in Iowa Rock Island Road, then graded on Iowa Central for several months In the fall of 1871, he bought eighty acres in Rock Creek Twp., to which he added to until he owned 320 acres. He sold all of his land, but 120 acres before his death. He was a Democrat, a member of the Catholic Church and a quiet retireing gentleman. ]ALL OF THE ABOVE IS FROM A SMALL BOOKLET PREPARED BY MARIDEAN HOTCHKIN THARP AND PUBLISHED IN AUGUST 1982 AS IS THE INFORMATION ON HIS WIFE ROSE.
The Biography book titled, "Past and Present of Jasper County, Iowa on page 783 has the following biogrphy on John: "The name of John Hotchkin, who came to us from far-away England and, by his residence in Jasper County, benefited not only himself but the community as well, should certainly be included in a history of the locality, for his life was not only an industrious but an honorable one.
Mr. Hotchkin was born in Lincolnshire, England, August 6, 1832. He was the son of Henry and Hannah (Readman) Hotchkin, both natives of England, where they grew up and were married. The father conducted a dairy in early life, later working on farms. He and his wife lived and died in England. They were the parents of the following children: Mary, Bessie, Henry, Mark, William, John, Martha and Hannah.
John Hotchkin was educated in his native land and there grew to manhood. He worked there as a laborer for some time, emigrating to New Jersey in 1853 where he worked a year and a half as a coachman for John Cain, a banker in Elizabeth. He was then married and went to Staten Island, where he did general jobbing around the factory of the New York Iron Printing Company at Factoryville, Staten Island. Two years later he came to Will County, Illinois. There he bought five acres, which he rented, at the same time renting a farm himself. He remained in Illinois until 1869. The first day of that year he came to Grinnell, Iowa, and here entered a farm, but was cheated out of it. He worked the first year here on the Rock Island Road, then graded on the Iowa Central for several months. In the fall of 1871 he bought eighty acres in Rock Creek Township, to which he added until he owned three hundred and twenty acres. He was very successful as a general farmer and stock raiser and had a fine farm. He had sold off all his land but one hundred and twenty acres before his death.
Politically, he was a Democrat, but he never sought office. He was a member of the Catholic Church. He was a quiet, retiring gentlemen, who was never obtrusive, yet always willing to do his full duty as a citizen.
Mr. Hotchkin was married on March 30, 1854, to Rose A. Gaughan, who was born in County Meath, Ireland, and her death occurred in 1909. To the subject and wife the following children were born: Mrs. Martha N. Kelly, John H., Charles A. and William A., twins; Mrs. Rose H. McLaughlin, Philip E., Mrs. Elizabeth L. Flannigan and James Alfred."

John A. Hotchkin, wife Elizabeth Balcom and their daughter Myrtle Violia
Conflicting evidence states that John was born at Newfane, Niagara County, NY, USA, on 13 August 1871. Age 3 at the 1875 NY state census. Schmidt Family bible has a date of 19 August, but entries look like they were all made at once.. He was the son of Abram Eli Hotchkin Jr. and Harriet Maham. He married Elizabeth (Libbie) Balcom at Niagara Falls, Niagara County, NY, USA, on 4 July 1901.1 John Albert Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1910 at Porter, Niagara County, NY, USA. He registered for the World War I Draft in 1918 while living at Youngstown, Niagara County, NY, USA. He signs his name with great diffculty as if he was illiterate. The entire form is filled out by someone else.". He died on 14 February 1937 at Porter, Niagara County, NY, at age 65.2,3 He was buried at Riverdale Cemetery, at Lockport, Niagara County, NY, USA.

His age and family relationship is given in the 1900 census of Porter Center, Niagara Co., NY. The special 1892 census of New York state gives his birth as 1870/1871.

John C. Hotchkin

M, (30 October 1847 - 14 January 1930)
John C. Hotchkin was born on 30 October 1847 at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA.1,2,3 He was the son of Mark Caldwell (M. C.) Hotchkin and Jennette M. Hovey. He married Henriette J. Locke at Holt, Clay County, MO, USA, on 14 February 1872. John C. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1880 at Banner Twp, Rush County, KS, USA. The census lists the family as: John Hotchkins, age 38, b NY; wife Henryette, age 31, b IL; dau Clara, age 10, b IL;son Augustus, age 6, b Co; son Alison, age 3, b KS; Census taker had crossed out Little at Ally's name.. He resided at Portland, Multnomah County, OR, USA, in 1911. He died on 14 January 1930 at Los Angeles County, CA, USA, at age 82.4 He was buried at Valhalla Memorial Park (Pierce Bros.), at Burbank, Los Angeles County, CA, USA. Lot 4449, Sp 2.

John C. Hotchkin’s death certificate said that he was a retired merchant and had lived in California for 20 years. At the time of his death, he lived at 218 S. Elmwood, Burbank, CA. His death was caused by Myocarditis. This certificate cleared up a problem with his mothers maiden name. Earlier records had it as LLovey due to difficulty in reading these records. The proper name is Jennette Hovey. We know that John was with his parents at the 1850 census of Sangerfield, NY and still there at the special 1855 census. He is not found again until the 1880 census of Shawnee Co, KS, where he has a wife and two children. This census says that his oldest child, Gussie was born in Colorado in 1875 so we know that he must have lived somewhere in Colorado, but we have no further information on this location. John is also listed in the 1900 census of St. Joseph, Berrien Co., MI, (78118) with his wife Henrietta and step daughter Clarrisa (Clara). At this census they say that only two of their children are still alive and we know that Clara and Allen were alive after this date; so Augustus or Gussie must have died before this date. John was a witness at the wedding of his sister in Berrien Co, MI in Jan 1898 along with his brother, Robert Henry who was called Robert C. We next find him in Portland, OR from listings in the Portland City Directories. He was there at least in 1911, but the Directories are incomplete so we cannot be sure of the time that he spent in Portland. While in Portland, he lived with his son, Allen H. Hotchkin at 921 E. 40th Street. The Los Angeles City Directory of 1912 has J. C. Hotchkin residing at 627 S. Grand, in the 1914 directory it is John C. at 219 Hamlet, and the 1920 directory has him at 1116 Spence, the home of his son Allen H. Later he lived in Burbank, CA and is buried there in the Valhala Cemetery, beside his wife Henrietta and son Allen. A Deed recorded in Oneida Co, NY in 1894 refers to a wife named Etta but obviously this is Henrietta as we know that they were married before this date and after this date, as they are buried together. The 1920 Census has a Cristian Motor or Mather, age 49, born in Illinois, listed as a daughter, living with John.
