     Howard Jay Hotchkin was born on 30 July 1899 at Newfane, Niagara County, NY, USA.1,2 He was the son of James W. Hotchkin and Ida May Halstead. Howard Jay Hotchkin registered for the World War I Draft in 1918 while living at Newfane, Niagara County, NY, USA. The registration card gave additional information on him: "He gives his age as 19, born 30 July 1999. He says that he is a farmer working for his father James, and he gives his father as his nearest relative.". He died on 3 July 1957 at Newfane, Niagara County, NY, at age 57.3 He was buried at Corwin Cemetery, at Newfane, Niagara County, NY, USA.

     The 1900 census has Howard with his parents, at home on Coomer Rd., Newfane, NY. Lenora Bush Hotchkin said in a letter November 1989 that he was deceased. A letter from his niece, Nancy Valenti gives the year of his death. Records of the United Methodist Church of Newfane show that he became a member on 15 December 1915 in the class of E.E. Jones. Howard is buried in Corwin Cemetery with his brother and sister. According to Nancy Valenti and the records, Howard never married.

He married Barbara Fay Tlacil at Los Angeles County, CA, on 1 July 1950. Calif Marriage Index 1949- 1959. Howard Roger Hotchkin and Barbara Fay Tlacil were divorced in November 1970 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, CA, USA.3 He married Lorraine Barbara Persch at Los Angeles County, CA, on 8 April 1973. The CA Marriage index gives her 2 surnames, Palmer and Persch..4 Howard Roger Hotchkin and Lorraine Barbara Persch were divorced on 13 August 1981 at Los Angeles County, CA.3 Howard Roger Hotchkin married Mary Ann Holt after 1981 at CA, USA. He resided at Big Bear Lake, San Bernardino County, CA, USA, in 1991. Howard Roger Hotchkin married Maxine Guest on 22 December 2002 at Las Vegas, Clark County, NV, USA.5 Howard Roger Hotchkin died on 20 June 2006 at Oceanside, San Diego County, CA, USA, at age 79. Obituary says that he was born Nov 11, 1926 in Beverly Hills, CA and died June 20 2006 in Oceanside, CA of cancer and abdominal aneurysm. He served in US Army during World War II. He received an Engineering Degree at the University of California, Berkeley in 1949.
     He retired after 43 years with Lockheed Aircraft. He enjoyed deep sea fishing and was a SCUBA diver. He built remote moble air craft and was an Eagle Scout.
     He was a member of the Royal Arch Masons and lodge treasurer for the Oceanside Elks Lodge #1561.
     He is survived by his wife of 4 years, Maxine Guest Hotchkin: daughter Phyllis Weintraub of Israel; stepson and stepdaughter Thomas and Maria Guest of Highlands Ranch, CO; stepdaughter Karen Guest of Arlington, TX; brothers David Hotchkin of Milbrea, CA and Thomas Hotchkin of Culver City, CA; and four grandchildren. His son Frank Roger Hotchkin preceded him in death..6 He was buried at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery, at San Diego, San Diego County, CA, USA.

Hubbard Hotchkin

     Hubbard Hotchkin was born on 7 November 1772 at Litchfield County, CT, USA.1 He was the son of Samuel Hodgkin and Jerusha Hubbard. He married Alethea Little at New Haven, New Haven County, CT, USA. Hubbard Hotchkin lived in 1800 at Barkhamsted, Litchfield County, CT, USA. He appeared on the census of 1830 at Salina, Onondaga County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hubbard Hotchkin, 1 male 10 to 15, 1 male 50 to 60; 1 female 10 to 15, 1 female 15 to 20, 1 female 50 to 60.. He died on 11 December 1846 at Salina, Onondaga County, NY, at age 74. Died at age 74 according to gravestone..2 He was buried at Messina Springs Cemetery, at DeWitt, Onondaga County, NY, USA.

     A Deed on file in Litchfield Co., CT shows Shoger Olmstead of New Hanford granting to Hubbard Hochkin of Barkhamsted, a parcel of land in Barkhamsted. The Deed was dated 23 May 1798. During the years 1801 and 1802 he received several properties from William Little and in 1803 and 1808 Asahel Little and Alfred Little all in Barkhamsted granted him properties. A transaction in 1816 gives his address as Barkhamsted while one in 1818 gives his address as Manlius, Onondaga Co., NY.
     Records located at the Onondaga Historical Association show this family’s burial in the DeWitt Messina Springs Cemetery. The Compiler and his wife Cathy visited Messina Springs Cemetery in 1992; located on James Street between Syracuse and DeWitt. The cemetery is in very bad condition, a fence was put around it much too late. No stones are left for Hubbard and Alathea, but there are stones for William, his wife Hannah and Jerusha, and her husband James Alvord.
     The 1830 census show one male child missing from our list, born 1815 to 1820, the 1840 census show 2 male children missing, one born 1820 to 1825 and one born 1830 to 1835.

He married Claribel (Clara Belle) Roberts at Bradford, McKean County, PA, USA, on 6 July 1929. Hubert Leland Hotchkin Sr. appeared on the census of 1930 at Lansing, Ingham County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: Hubert Hotchkin, 24 (1905), m at 28( doesn't make any sense), born in MI, father born in MI, mother in IL, stock clerk at Reo Motors; wife Clarabel, 25 (1904), first married at 24 (doesn't make sense as this is her second marriage, born in NI, parents born in MI; step daughter Elenor M. Bommer, 7 (1922), single, born in MI, parents born in MI.. He married Dorothy Lillian Hawley at Benson, Cochise County, AZ, USA, on 27 March 1958.2 He married Barbara Cornelia Crow at Lordsburg, Hidalgo County, NM, USA, on 30 July 1959. Lordsburg, NM Methodist Church. Her grand daughter Sue Carden of West Palm Beach, FL was her Maid of Honor. Betty Judd seems to have the wrong date as she gave the year as 1958..3,4 Hubert Leland Hotchkin Sr. died on 4 June 1975 at Benson, Cochise County, AZ, at age 68.5 He was buried at South Lawn Memorial Cemetery, at Tucson, Pima County, AZ, USA.

     Family records and his daughter, Betty Judd furnished the information on Hubert. Hubert was an insurance salesman and had an office on the main street of Benson, AZ for many years. He left Michigan and went to Arizona because his wife Clarabelle had tuberculosis of the lungs. Hubert adopted his wife's daughter, Eleanor May, by her first marriage to Boomer. His memory card shows his birth as December 30 1906 and his funeral at Benson Mortuary, Benson, AZ. Social Security records confirm his birth and death dates and locations.

He gives his sister Hannah Mary (Mrs Ernest Thomas) as his permanent contact.1,2 He was the son of Earnest Frank Hotchkin and Anna (Annie) Mueller. Hugh Jerome Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1900 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Hugh J, age 13, born 11-1886 in SD.. He registered for the World War I Draft on 12 September 1918 while living at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA. The registration card gave additional information on him: "He gives his complete name and birth on 23 Nov 1885. He is unemployed and gives his father Frank E. and nearest relative.". He resided at Chicago, Cook County, IL, in 1928. He died on 12 April 1960 at Santa Ana, Orange County, CA, USA, at age 74.3,4 He was buried at Fairhaven Memorial Park, at Santa Ana, Orange County, CA, USA.

     Hugh M. and Raymond Hotchkin supplied information on Hugh J. and said that this uncle was a bachelor school teacher who boarded with his sister Hanna Thomas after his retirement. The 1904 through the 1910 city directories show Hugh as a book binder, living with his parents and brother at 5145 S. Winchester. The 1928 Polk Directory of Chicago finds him living at 5829 Artesian, Chicago and says that he is employed at Tilden Technical High School. He moved to California, after retirement, lived with his sister and her husband and died in Santa Ana, Orange Co., CA. Hugh Miller Hotchkin calls him, "the scholar of the family".

Hugh John Hotchkin married Anna Marie Petek on 22 May 1942 at Cook County, IL, USA.2 Hugh John Hotchkin enlsted on 27 June 1942 while living at Chicago, Cook County, IL. His enlistment notes said: " Hugh J. Hotchkin, native of Illinois, enlisted in Cook County, IL, no branch, Private, enlisted for the duration, 4 years of high school, married, height 66, weight 163. His birth year is given as 1914 which differs from compilers records.". He died on 16 July 1954 at Palm Beach, Palm Beach County, FL, USA, at age 38. Florida Death Index gives middle name of John..1

     Hugh died of Polio in 1953 according to his brother Ray. His newspaper obituary gives a 1954 date and says that they had moved to Florida the previous October.

     Hugh Miller Hotchkin Sr. was born on 17 August 1908 at Chicago, Cook County, IL, USA.1,2 He was the son of William Miller Hotchkin and Elfrieda Schick. He married Thelma Avonelle Simpson at IN, USA, on 17 August 1946. Resided in Battle Creek, MI at time of marriage..3 Hugh Miller Hotchkin Sr. was a General Contractor in 1969 at Mansfield, Richland County, OH, USA, A US News article says that he moved his Jacobs Construction crew on site about a year ago and will finish the Mall on time. Article describes him as a 40-year veteran of the construction business who got his start carrying beer to the bricklayers in his native Chicago. "He is the type of man you would expect to be in charge, direct without being curt, factual as the tools of his trade, discerning yet respectful of the men who are turning blueprints into bricks."4 Hugh died on 29 May 1994 at Sarasota, Sarasota County, FL, USA, at age 85. Death Cert #65653.5

     Hugh supplied enough information on his branch of the family to direct a search to Eber Hall Hotchkin. Hugh says that he and his wife raised their family in Jackson, MI where the Compiler was born. Hugh has been a builder and designer and did a large project in Porto Rico in the 1970's.
     Hugh wrote a letter to the Compiler with a few general comments of his knowledge of the family. "They were of average size, with a fair to ruddy complexion, sandy hair, strong facial characterictics, deep set eyes, prominent cheek bones and high foreheads. They were tradesmen, carpenters, farmers, printers, students and teachers; of strong character. I know of no wrong doing or breaking of the law. Righteous in all dealings and surprisingly without deep religious beliefs." Hugh says that he has a son completing his college work at the Robert Jones University, Greenfield, SC; but he didn't says which son.

Ivabelle Hotchkin

     Ivabelle was born at White Sulphur Springs, Sullivan County, NY, USA, on 29 July 1911. Birth and death dates given in obituary in Times Herald obituaries, November 26 2000.. She was the daughter of Frank William Hotchkin and Eunice E. Lewis. She married Leo Robert Tuttle at NY, USA, circa 1929. She married Richard Misner at NY. Richard is still single at the 1930 census.. Ivabelle Hotchkin died on 25 November 2000 at Roscoe Community Nursing Home, Roscoe, Sullivan County, NY, USA, at age 89. Sullivan County Democrat 28 Nov 2000. Her obituary gives brothers Harry, Earl, a sister Thelma, as being pre-deceased. She is survived by son Paul L. Tuttle.

"Ivabelle Misner of Livingston Manor, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, November 25, 2000, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home in Roscoe. She was 89 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frank W. and Eunice E. Lewis Hotchkin, she was born July 29, 1911, in White Sulphur Springs. She was the widow of Leo Robert Tuttle and Richard Misner.
Mrs. Misner was a member of the Livingston Manor United Methodist Church, the White Sulphur Springs Seniors Citizens and the Cornell Cooperative Extension.
She is survived by a son, Paul L. Tuttle of Livingston Manor; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Charles Leo Tuttle, two brothers, Harry Hotchkin and Earl Hotchkin, and a sister, Thelma Hotchkin.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor with Pastor Dorothy Smith officiating.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope."

"Ivabelle Misner of Livingston Manor, a homemaker and a lifelong area resident, died Saturday, November 25, 2000, at the Roscoe Community Nursing Home in Roscoe. She was 89 years of age.
The daughter of the late Frank W. and Eunice E. Lewis Hotchkin, she was born July 29, 1911, in White Sulphur Springs. She was the widow of Leo Robert Tuttle and Richard Misner.
Mrs. Misner was a member of the Livingston Manor United Methodist Church, the White Sulphur Springs Seniors Citizens and the Cornell Cooperative Extension.
She is survived by a son, Paul L. Tuttle of Livingston Manor; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son, Charles Leo Tuttle, two brothers, Harry Hotchkin and Earl Hotchkin, and a sister, Thelma Hotchkin.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor with Pastor Dorothy Smith officiating.
Cremation will be made at the Cedar Hill Crematory in Middle Hope."

James Alfred Hotchkin married Mary Frances Duggan, daughter of John Duggan and Mary A. Powers, on 9 October 1901 at Grinnell, Poweshiek County, IA.2 James Alfred Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1910 at Rock Creek, Jasper County, IA, USA. The census lists the family as: James A.      James Elliott Hotchkin was born on 14 October 1869 at Rives Twp, Jackson County, MI, USA.1 He was the son of Noah Frank Hotchkin and Evilena Ann Granville. He married Sophia C. Weber at Benton Harbor, Berrien County, MI, USA, on 20 May 1896.2 James Elliott Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1900 at Benton Harbor, Berrien County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, James E., age 30, b 10-1869 in MI, parents birth location unknown, married 4 years; wife Sophia, age 30, b 12-1869 in MI, parents born in Germany, married 4 years, no children.. He married Candace Catherine (Carrie) Koser at Benton Harbor, Berrien County, MI, on 1 June 1910. Carrie is still widowed at 21 apr 1910 census..3 James Elliott Hotchkin was Dry Cleaner circa 1935 He owned and operated the Enterprise Dry Cleaners. He died on 29 September 1950 at Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo County, MI, USA, at age 80.4,5 He was buried at Crystal Springs Cemetery, at Benton Harbor, Berrien County, MI, USA.

     James Elliot's birth is recorded in Jackson Co. Vital Records, pg 34, 1869 and shows him born on 14 October 1869 to Noah F. and Evaline A. Hotchkin. These records say that Noah was born in NY and Evaline in ME. James was a member of the 1st Baptist Church of Benton Harbor, located at 236 Pipestone Street and was baptized at this church in September 1886. The church records lists his death as 23 June 1966, which is an error.
     At the 1870 census he is living with his parents in Leslie, Rives Twp., Jackson Co., MI next door to Abram Eli Hotchkin Jr. The 1900 census finds him living at 208 High St., Benton Harbor with his wife Sophia. The 1910 census finds him still living in Benton Harbor with his two children, Donald J., and Beatrice. Living with the family is Evilena A., his mother, age 72, born 1830 in Maine.
     His death is recorded in Death Certificate #172, died 14 October 1950 at the Kalamazoo State Hospital after a stay of 4 months and 18 days. James had operated a dry cleaning business in Benton Harbor for a long period of time. His death and funeral was reported in Benton Harbor newspapers of which, the Compiler has a copy. Services were held by Rev John S. Hocomb of the First Baptist Church at the Slaughter and Hill Funeral Home. The news report confirmed his death in Kalamazoo and said that he had lived in Benton Harbor since 1882, and for some time had worked for Enterprise Dry Cleaners.      James H. Hotchkin was born on 25 July 1834 at Wilson, Niagara County, NY, USA.1 He was the son of Abram Eli Hotchkin Sr. and Electa Smith. James H. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1850 at Jackson County, MI, USA. The census lists the family as: James H. Hotchkin, he is with his parents.. He married Frances A. Michal at Aurora, Kane County, IL, USA, on 3 March 1855.2 James H. Hotchkin was a Private, andserved in 19th Bat'ry, NY Light Art'y, during the Civil War. He was a Farmer circa 1870. He died on 1 September 1907 at Newfane, Niagara County, NY, USA, at age 73.3,4 He was buried on 3 September 1907 at North Ridge Cemetery, at Ransomville, Niagara County, NY, USA. Sec 2, Lot 102.
     New York family held their 2nd Hotchkin Bogelow Reunion.5


     James’ family lived on Coomer Rd., Newfane, NY from shortly after he was married in Illinois until his death, except according to census records, for a short period during 1875 when the family returned to Illinois where son James W. was born. James is described in the Michigan Family Records given to the Compiler by his mother and the Hotchkin Family Reunion Notes. He is with his parents at the 1850 Census of Michigan and at the New York 1860 census.
     James enlisted as a Pvt. in the 19th Battery, NY Light Artillery on 28 Aug 1862, at Lockport, NY, the same day and with the same unit as his brother William H. H. Hotchkin. He was wounded accidentally on 9 Nov 1864 near Popular Springs Church, VA, and was honorably discharged on 1 Apr 1865. His pension file has copies of his Death Certificate and Marriage License. The Civil War records give his personal description as: 5 feet, 8 1/2 inches tall, gray eyes, fair color and light hair. His four children living in 1897 were listed in the pension file, with their birth dates.
     James’Will is filed with the Niagara Co., NY, Surrogates Records, Box 10095. In this Will is an Affidavit by his son James W. giving his father’s death as about 1 Sep 1907, and his mother’s death as approximately 1917. The Will listed his children as Carrie M. Fellows, Electa M. Richards, James W. Hotchkin, and Belle Stevens’ three children, Opal M. Sturgis, Doris Godfrey, and Clarence Stevens. Belle had previously died. James and his wife Frances are buried in Section 2, Lot #102, North Ridge Cemetery, Cambria, NY. Frances death was reported in the Lockport Union Sun. Niagara County land records show that James H. Hotchkin of Wilson, bought 2.5 acres on 14 Oct 1854, Book 61, p 275, Lot 77, T15, R7, 2.5 acres from R. Spencer and sold this land to L. Wilson on 12 Oct 1854.

     James Harvey Hotchkin was born on 29 October 1872 at Spring Arbor, Jackson County, MI, USA.1,2 He was the son of Smith Curtis Hotchkin and Mary Elizabeth Crispell. He married Clara Belle (Carrie) Caswell at MI, USA, in 1901.1 James Harvey Hotchkin registered for the World War I Draft in 1918 while living at Concord, Jackson County, MI, USA. The registration card gave additional information on him: "Age 45, born 29 Oct 1872. In business for himself as a Thrasher. Lists wife Carrie as a dependent.". He appeared on the census of 1920 at Concord, Jackson County, MI. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, James H., age 47, b NY; wife Carrie, age 51, b MI; dau Eliz, age 15, b ND; son Lyle, age 13, b ND.. He died in 1925 at Concord, Jackson County, MI.3,4 He was buried at Maple Grove Cemetery, at Concord, Jackson County, MI, USA.

     His residence in Wiprud, McLean Co., ND is confirmed by the April 1909 reunion article where at that time his father (Smith) had just returned from a 6 month visit. Wiprud was located 8 miles north of Turtle Lake on the South West shore of Crooked Lake. This area was also named Casey. (Information according to North Dakota Historical Library in Bismark) The 1880 census found him living with his parents and brother in Bancroft City, MI. At the 1900 census he is living with his father and sister Edith, in Mills Twp., Midland Co., MI. This census gives his birth as October 1872 and the place as NY. The 1884 Michigan census finds him with his parents in Spring Arbor, Jackson Co., MI and gives his birth in NY and his middle initial as T.
     An auction announcement from 1909 shows James H. as proprietor, J.G. Simpson as Auctioner and John E. Reuter as clerk. The auction was held half way between Turtle Lake and Ruso on the main traveled road, three miles north of Wiprud.
     His Will was probated in Jackson Co., MI and said that he was a partner in a threshing operation, Eckert, Hotchkin and Fritz. Fritz was Larata Fritz, husband of Edith R. Hotchkin.

His proper age is found in his Draft Registration, born 11 May 1881.1 He was the son of Henry Nelson Hotchkin and Alice J. Burling. He married Mary Barbara Courte at Richmondville, Schoharie County, NY, USA, on 10 August 1903.2 James Henry Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1910 at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, James, 30, married once, 6 years; wife Mary B., 29, married once, 6 years, one child, one living, born OH, father born Ger., mother born France; dau Alice M., 3, b NY.. He resided at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA, in 1910. He registered for the World War I Draft in 1918 while living at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, USA. The registration card gave additional information on him: "He gives his age as 37, born 11 May 1881. He gives his wife Mary as nearest relative.". He died on 1 June 1942 at Rochester, Monroe County, NY, at age 61.3 He was buried at Parma Union Cemetery, at Parma, Monroe County, NY, USA. Obituary gives the information.

     James parents are assigned only on the basis of his residing with them for a number of years at 72 Pennsylvania, Rochester, NY according to the Rochester City Directory. James daughter Susie is also listed at this address in the 1904 through 1907 directories. His marriage to Mary Court is identified in the wedding announcement of their daughter Susie and the date comes from the NY Marriage Index, which does not identify the spouse. James H. appears first in the 1907 Rochester City Directory as a Driver, living with Charles H. Hotchkin at 42 Paesells St; in 1908-09 he is living at 150 7th St; in 1910 at 109 Penn; in 1911 at 271 Hayward; in 1912 at 49 Kluek; in 1913 at 215 Central Park; in 1914 at 446 Central Park; and in the last available directory in 1915 he is at 7 1/2 Miller.
