Alexander Semple Hotchkin1

M, (11 April 1863 - 19 March 1941)
Alexander S. Hotchkin
Alexander was born at Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, USA, on 11 April 1863. Alexander is listed in two 1910 censuses, first in Salano, CA with his family, where he is age 47 and 2nd in Klamath OR, where he is a boarder, age 49..2,3 He was the son of Henry W. Hotchkin and Mary Jane Semple. He married Jennie F. Russell at Indian Territory, USA, in 1894. Alexander Semple Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1900 at Twp 2, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Alexander S., age 36, b 4-1864 in Ind. Terr., married 6 years; wife Jennie F., age 25, b 10-1894 in TX, father b MS, mother b Eng., married 6 years, 3 children, 3 living; son Lowell E., age 5, b 10-1894 in Ind. Terr., father b Ind.      We know quite a bit about Alexander and his wife Jennie from various available records. At the 1900 Census, they are living in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory; now the Northeast part of Oklahoma. Living nearby were Charles E. Hotchkin and his wife Mary. The History of the State of Oklahoma, published in 1909 says that Alexander was an Indian school teacher for several years and then went to California to work for the US Government at the Mare Island Ship Yards. According to the children’s birth records given in the 1920 Census, their move to California would have been between 1907 and 1910; and their later move to Oregon about 1913. At the 1900 Census he had said that he was an Insurance Agent. The records at O'Hair Funeral Home say that he was an Accountant prior to his death and his daughter Lucy Pearl, in a letter to the Compiler, says that he worked for several Post Offices while in Oklahoma.
At the 1910 Census he is found in two places; he, his wife and children are found at 130 Illinois Street, Valley City, Salano Co., California, which would be the Mare Island area, and he is also listed as a boarder in the home of Silas and Lillian Robinson, Klamath Falls, Oregon. Here, he is described as a clerk at the Indian Agency. At both places he says that he has been married 16 years. At the Valley City location, all his children are listed as living at home and all except Ruth were born in Indian Territory. Ruth was born after arriving in California. Mary Louise and Helen Roberta were born after this date in Klamath. His obituary says that he worked in the Indian Agency from 1910 to 1919 when he retired due to ill health. The Compiler has visited the Klamath Indian Agency; about 30 miles north of Klamath Falls, now empty and fenced to protect the historical buildings. It was here that Mary Louise and Helen Roberta were born. Alexander and his wife Jennie made their home in Shippington, the lakeshore area of Klamath Falls, where they operated the Cook House for the Klamath Lumber and Box Company. The obituary said that his wife, 6 daughters and one son, three sisters, one brother and 11 grandchildren survived him. City Directories are available for Klamath Falls starting in 1936 and these directories give a further insight into the lives of Alexander's family. In 1936 he and Jennie are living at 2810 Front Street. At the next available directory, 1942-43, Jennie is a widow and operating the Shippington Boarding House by herself. At the 1949-50 directories, Jennie is operating the boarding house with the help of her son William R. Sr.
His widow, Jennie F. 9 Jun 1947, filed the Will of Alexander for probate. This Will listed his children as: Pauline D. Hotchkin, age 51, New York City; Lucy Carson, age 47, Redding, CA; Bessie Petty, age 40, Seattle, WA; Ruth Masters, age 38, Holland, OR; Louise Wood, age 35, Portland, OR; Helen Russel, age 32, Shippington, OR; William Hotchkin, age 49, Shippington, OR. According to the Will, he owned two pieces of real estate; his home, which was on lot 7 & 8 of Shippington Addition in Klamath Falls and 37 acres which was Lot 3 of Sec. 7 in Township 41 South, of Range 5, East of the Willamette Meridian, OR.
A Certificate is recorded in the County Recorders Office, Klamath County that show A. S. Hotchkin appointed as a pastor of the Yainax Indian Mission and entitled to perform marriages. The District Superintendent, Klamath District, and Conference of the Methodist Church of Oregon signed this certificate. The compiler has a copy of this document. Ebenezer Hotchkin Jr., in notes found in the Presbyterian Historical Society, refers to Alex as a preacher and teacher.

Alfred Earl Hotchkin

M, (31 July 1896 - 11 June 1968)
Alfred Earl Hotchkin was born on 31 July 1896 at Wynnewood, Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, USA.1,2 He was the son of Ebenezer Hotchkin DD and Maria Emaline Moore. Alfred Earl Hotchkin registered for the World War I Draft on 2 May 1917. The registration card gave additional information on him: "Single and living at 15th and Elm St, Durant, OK". He was Manager in 1920 at Sherman, Grayson County, TX, USA, He operated a Firestone Tire Store. He married Thelma Bennett at OK, USA, in 1921. Their marriage date is according to the 1930 census..3 Alfred Earl Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1930 at Sherman, Grayson County, TX. The census lists the family as: Alfred E. Hotchkin, 33 (1896), married at age 25, born OK, father born OK, mother MO, mgr of tire & rubber Co; wife Thelma, 27 1902), born OK, father born TN, mother born AK; sister Anna, 18 (1911), single, born OK.. He married Joella Oma Brownlee at Denton County, TX, USA, on 13 November 1948. Don Brownlee, dbrownlee@csun.edu.4 Alfred Earl Hotchkin and Joella Oma Brownlee were divorced circa 1960 at TX, USA. He married Susie Ruby Killion at Denton County, TX, on 14 December 1966.4 Alfred Earl Hotchkin died on 11 June 1968 at Fort Worth, Tarrant County, TX, USA, at age 71. Death date is confirmed by Funeral Home records. Death is listed in the Antler American newpaper form Antler, OK. Their date given is 13 June 1968. Likely this the newspaper publication date. The newpaper refers to him as A. Earl..5,6 He was buried at Highland Cemetery, at Durant, Bryan County, OK, USA. Lot 33.

According to the 1920-21 Durant City Directory, Earl A. boarded with his parents, at 1501 W. Elm St., and was a teller at the Durant National Bank. Earl and his wife Thelma lived in Sherman, TX, according to the Polk Directory in 1930-31 and he was manager of the local Firestone Service Store. Firestone must have moved him to Ft Worth because from at least 1935 to 1961, according to the Ft. Worth City Directories, he managed and was a salesman with Firestone Auto Supply and Service. His wife Thelma was with him at the 1935 Directory and until at least 1942. At the issue of the 1959 Directory, his wife is indicated as Joella. While living in Ft. Worth, his addresses were; 1935, 3836 Bunting Ave; 1941, 1608 Ashland; and finally in 1959, 4329 Cummings Dr.
Alfred and his wife Joella were among the Hotchkin's that owned property and vacationed at Tin Cup, Colorado. The first transfer is from Cora Belle Luce (formerly Core Belle Nissen) to Alfred E. Hotchkin on 12 July 1955; where she granted Lot 9, Block 32 in Book 335, pg 293. On 6 August 1958, this same person, granted to Alfred, Lot 10, Block 32. In 1966 there is a grant from Joella O. Hotchkin, a single woman, to Alfred of these same lots. This must have been part of the divorce settlement. A year later on 16 November 1967, Book 400, pg 41, Alfred and a new wife, Susie K., both living in Tarrant Co., TX, grant these same lots to Horace M. and Louise D.Lansford. Attending his funeral, according to Holmes Funeral Home records, were sisters, Christine Ryan from Sherman, TX, Mary Stephenson from Antlers, OK, Ann Wainwright from Sherman, and Lil DuLaney From Sherman. Rev Gainer conducted the services in the Holmes Chapel at Ft Worth, TX. Earl is buried in Highland Cemetery, Durant, OK adjacent to his parents and his baby son Alfred Earl Jr. His gravestone says Alfred Earl Hotchkin 7-31-1896 to 6-11-1968. His wife is not buried with him so it is likely that she survived him for some time and remarried. Social Security records confirm his birth date and give death date as June 1968.
Peggy Lou Clark Stephenson agrees that Alfred had three marriages but does not give the surnames exactly as the Compiler found them. Peggy says that Alfred and Thelma had a son who died within a few days of birth. She calls his second wife Jo Ellen and says that they adopted a son, while living in Ft Worth; and after their divorce, he married Sue, who also lived in Ft Worth.

Alfred J. Hotchkin

M, (2 May 1842 - 7 January 1921)
Alfred J. Hotchkin was born on 2 May 1842 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY, USA.1 He was the son of Benjamin Franklin Hotchkin and Jane M. Little. Alfred J. Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1860 at Watertown, Jefferson County, NY. The census lists the family as: A. J.,Hotchkin age 28. b NY, Saddlery Mfg., $12000, $3000; wife Cornelia, age 26, b NY.. He married Cornelia Patten at NY, USA, in 1868. Cornelia's orbituary gives their wedding date.. He resided at Frederick County, VA, USA, in 1890. Alfred J. Hotchkin died on 7 January 1921 at Syracuse, Onondaga County, NY, USA, at age 78.2 He was buried at Waterville Cemetery, at Waterville, Oneida County, NY, USA. Sec 2, Lot 108.

The Village Directories of Jefferson Co. lists Alfred J. Hotchkin as a boarder in the home of his father, B. F. Hotchkin, 29 Clinton St., Watertown, NY. At the 1870 Census, he is living close to other member of his family in Watertown, with his wife Cornelia. They have no children.
Alfred owned an interest in a Carriage Works in the city of Syracuse, NY and documents at the Onondaga Historical Association tell a story of this enterprise. "A new carriage, boxed for shipment, fell from the wagon of Hotchkin’s & Wilder yesterday, as it was being conveyed to the railroad for shipment. This is the second mishap of that kind that has occurred to the firm within a few days." (Syracuse Std 1 May 1884). Another account from the Syracuse Journal, 23 Sep 1884 tells of the bankruptcy of the firm of Hotchkin & Wilder. "The bankruptcy was due to the death of a Director of Importers and Traders at the National Bank of New York who secured loans for Hotchkin & Wilder." This death stopped the loans needed for operation. A clipping dated, Syracuse Standard 17 Jan 1885, said, "Yesterday, W. B. Clark of Waterloo, assignee of the insolvent estate of Hotchkin & Wilder, was in the city negotiating for the sale of the tools and machinery of the bankrupt, to a proposed new firm of carriage manufacturers, provided a satisfactory arrangement can be made with P. W. Fobes for a lease of the works in Geddes." Hotchkin must have resumed the business later because the Onondaga Historical Association has a picture of a buggy, which appeared in the Herald on 15 Feb 1888, which claims, "The best general purpose wagon, patented 25 January 1887." The files include information on a later business failure. This one is titled, "The Hotchkin Failure," and dated 11 July 1888. It says that, "the assets of Cornelia P. Hotchkin, wife of Alfred J., has been assigned to Hiram W. Plumb for benefit of her creditors." The cause of this failure was a fire that occurred about 9 June. The article claims that there was a total of $34,573.11 of Notes signed by A. J. Hotchkin or Cornelia P. Hotchkin as part of the liabilities, besides 101 employees owed money. The total liabilities, not covered by assets, amounted to $130,936.95. The files also contain a letter dated, 16 July 1890 in which Alfred J. Hotchkin assigns $600.00 of his rights and title to the estate of his mother, Jane M. Hotchkin, to Jane Livingston Armour in exchange for a $500.00 loan. In a letter dated, 9 August 1890, Saratoga Springs, NY, the Note was returned to Cornelia P. Hotchkin in exchange for $500.00.
Alfred is listed in the Syracuse City Directories of 189798 and 189899 as a Commercial Traveler, living at 213 and 215 Green St. His birth and death are recorded in the records of Waterville Cemetery, and he is buried with his wife Cornelia.3,4,5

Alfred Melancthon Hotchkin

M, (18 October 1845 - 16 April 1924)
Alfred Melancthon Hotchkin was born on 18 October 1845 at Caledonia, Livingston County, NY, USA. 1900 census of Meadville Co, Pa gives a date of Oct 1843. He was the son of Augustus Hotchkin and Adeline Nelson. Alfred Melancthon Hotchkin was a Private, andserved in Co I, 13th NY Infantry, during the Civil War. He married Charlotte M. Hotchkin at NY, USA, in 1870. The date is according to the 1900 census.. Alfred Melancthon Hotchkin married Kittie Osborn on 7 October 1895 at Caledonia, Livingston County, NY. This marriage seems very unlikely, but it is clearly announced in the newspaper. There may be an unknown A. M. Hotchkin, but this is also unlikely..

Alfred Melancthon Hotchkin appeared on the census of 1900 at Meadville, Crawford County, PA, USA. The census lists the family as: Hotchkin, Alfred M., Oct, 1843, 56 (age crossed out),married 30 years, born NY, parents born NY, day laborer; Charlotte M., Apr 1840, 60, married 30 years, one child, one living, born NY, parents born NY; son Edward H., Oct 1881, 18, single, born OH, day laborer, parents born OH. Living next door are Nathan C. Heth and wife Elma E. Hotchkin.. He died on 16 April 1924 at Meadville, Crawford County, PA, USA, at age 78. He died at the County Farm in Woodcock, Crawford Co., PA..2 He was buried at Greendale Cemetery, at Meadville, Crawford County, PA, USA.

The 1850 census calls him Alfred M. and a newspaper clipping in Caledonia, NY says that he married Kittie Osburn on 7 October 1895. This article called him A.M. Hotchkin and described him as son of Augustus. Alfred was not listed with his family at the 1855 NY state census of Caledonia. Talcott gives his marriage to his cousin Charlotte. The marriage to Kittie Osborn doesn't seem possible based on the 1910 census of Meadville, PA, which says that he and Lotta M. (Charlotte ?) have been married 39 years. He gave his age as 18 and birth at Caledonia, NY on 4 January 1862, when he enlisted in the Civil War. Alfred M. appears in the Rochester City Directories for years 1872 through 1875 as a Laborer. He always resided at the home of his brother George N. Hotchkin. At the 1920 census, he is in Meadville as a boarder with Elmer Brown (likely because George had moved to Meadville.)
Alfred enlisted as a Pvt in Co I, 13th NY Infantry at Rochester, NY and was mustered in on 4 December 1861. His desertion was claimed on 11 August 1862, but he arrived at Camp Distribution, Alexandria, VA on 27 August 1862 and was admitted to Camp Convalescent where he was released on 4 January 1863 and discharged from the service on 9 February 1863. The desertion charge was admitted as an error. His illness was described as TB. An A. Hotchkin, Pri., Co. B, 12th Regt., PA appears in the records of the Andersonville, GA prison camp. These records say that he was in the 4th squad, 5th mess and was transferred to Camp Laughtin, Miller, GA on 11 November 1864.
